Exar Introduces Two Industry First High-Performance Octal Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitters (UARTs) with 16- or 32-Byte First-in-First-Out (FIFO)

Fastest Octal UARTs - 15 Mbps - in the Industry and Supports 2.25V-3.63V Voltage Range

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 14 -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR), released two industry-first, highly integrated, 15 Mbps UARTs, the XR16V598 and XR16V698. The 16-Byte/32-Byte XR16V598/V698, when added to the previously announced 64-byte FIFO XR16V798, gives customers a wide variety of design options and complements Exar's high-performance, 8-bit bus interface octal UART family. These devices are targeted at Point-of-Sale (POS), servers, industrial automation, public parking systems, ticketing machines among others.

"At 15 Mbps, the XR16V598/698 pushes past competitors' offerings to support the high-data rate requirements found in advanced consumer and industrial applications," said Levent Ozcolak, vice president, Interface Product Line. "In addition to supporting faster data rates, this octal UART family has a wide variety of features including 16- 32-, or 64-Byte FIFO as well as other enhanced capabilities such as automatic hardware/software flow control, fractional baud rate generator and a global interrupt status register. These features, which are not typically found in legacy UARTs, enable system architects to further optimize their designs and accelerate bringing their products to market."

Key Product Features

Both the XR16V598/V698 offer a wide variety of features enabling system architects to bring their OEM products to market faster. Each device has a global interrupt status register which allows the interrupt service routine to quickly identify and service the channels that are pending. Performance is increased by eliminating the need to individually read each channel's status to determine if it requires servicing.

Unlike the legacy UARTs that require one chip select and one interrupt line per channel, the XR16V598/V698 require only one chip select and one interrupt line per device therefore simplifying the hardware design. Also supporting hardware design efficiency is the fractional baud rate generator. This feature gives the hardware designer the flexibility to use a clock source that may already be utilized by other components on the board to generate the desired baud rates. This eliminates the need for an extra crystal or external clock source.

Ideal for mixed voltage environments, the XR16V598/V698 with 5V tolerant inputs operates from 2.25V - 3.63V. In addition, it has 5V tolerant inputs. This feature allows the XR16V598/V698 to be used in a design where the input voltage levels may be greater than the supply voltage of the XR16V598/V698 without increasing the power consumption of the XR16V598/V698.

The 16V598/698 supports automatic RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR hardware flow control with programmable hysteresis, automatic software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, RS-485 half-duplex direction control with programmable turn-around delay, Intel or Motorola bus interface and sleep mode with a wake-up indicator. It also has the industry standard 16C550 register set, and is pin-for-pin compatible with Exar's XR16V798.

Interface Products

Exar has one of the broadest portfolios of high-performance interface solutions including UARTs, serial transceivers -- RS-232, RS-485, and multi-protocol -- and integrated UART/transceiver combinations. For chip-to-chip or system-to-system connections, Exar's single and multi-channel interface ICs provides immediate competitive advantages to designers: low power, reduction in board space requirements, increased bandwidth capacity, and enhanced product features. Interface devices are found practically everywhere including point-of-sale (POS) terminals, digital televisions, industrial automation equipment, handheld devices, and networking environments.

Tools and Support

The XR16V598/V698 are supported by Exar's UART software drivers for popular operating systems including Windows 2000, XP and Linux. With the availability of software drivers and Exar's application support line, UART customers can accelerate implementation by eliminating driver development, testing and diagnostic procedures.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information
