Océ Colour Scanner Wins iF Award 2006
Océ© TDS450/TCS500 award for user-friendly design
Venlo, the Netherlands, 22 August 2006-Océ© has again won an iF design award; this time for its latest colour scanner used in its TDS450 and TCS500 wide format black & white and colour systems. The iF award jury citation praises the colour scanner for its clear design language and intuitive user interface. With its user-friendly operation, this scanner meets the jury's criterion of 'Less marketing, more design' in full.
'Form follows function' design
In line with this award criterion, the international expert jury this year selected products with user-focused operation and a design in which form follows function. This new design approach, embodied in many of the latest generation of Océ© products, meets users' wishes for ergonomic systems that are free of barriers to effective, straightforward operation.
User-friendly design and convenient operation
The user-friendly design and convenient operation of the Océ© TDS450/TCS500 scanner is clear at a glance. Originals are fed into the scanner at a comfortable working height, and the digital width recognition ensures that originals are always correctly positioned inside the scanner. User interaction is through a compact, high-contrast display panel providing extensive graphic feedback and located at a convenient viewing height with an individually adjustable position. The panel also fully meets the needs of people with limited mobility or visual impairments.
Ergonomic user interface
Inspired by today's palmtop devices, the ergonomic user interface uses a simple 'Scroll&Click' mechanism which offers easy navigation and highly intuitive operation. The interface design, menus and terminology are based on principles with which users are already familiar as confirmed by live tests. Even more complex levels are accessible without the need to study the manual. And complex scan jobs can be preprogrammed in templates, allowing them to be carried out whenever needed at the touch of a single button.

But the outstanding design of the Océ© TDS450/TCS500 scanner is not just visible on the outside. It features the latest Océ© Direct Scan technology based on a unique 'single camera- single mirror' architecture. These technical modules are housed in a sturdy design frame that is positioned shock-free for robust operation. This ensures consistent and precise images throughout the scan line in both black & white and colour. Making the system simple for occasional users as well as ready for extensive use.
About the iF design awards
This year's iF design awards involved almost 2000 products submitted from 37 countries, 688 of them representing 12 categories finally receiving the iF award for design excellence. This year's key criterion of 'Less marketing, more design' reflects a wish for a 'universal design' concept in which products are easy to operate by users of all levels and all ages. This concept is likely to become a key iF award evaluation criterion in years to come.
The iF (International Forum Design) product design awards are among the world's top three design prizes. Submissions are judged by top international designers who are responsible not only for selecting the prize-winners, but also for maintaining the high iF design principles and the design quality which the renowned iF label represents.
