Numerex and CalAmp Announce Solution for Digital Migration of M2M Applications

Solution Features CalAmp's AMPS Radio Conversion Modem and Numerex Networks(TM) for Streamlined, Cost-Effective Move to Digital

ATLANTA and OXNARD, Calif., July 18 / -- Numerex Corp., a leading enabler of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions for market leaders, and CalAmp Corp., a leading provider of wireless communication solutions, today announced an end-to-end solution for the migration of M2M applications and users from analog to digital networks. This announcement comes in response to the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Analog Sunset Ruling, which becomes effective in February 2008.

On June 15, 2007, the FCC upheld its analog cellular sunset deadline of February 18, 2008. Under the ruling, cellular licensees will no longer be required to provide Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) analog network service after the sunset date. Analog networks have traditionally been used to transmit data for M2M applications. As a result, potential cellular service interruption could leave businesses and consumers that have not migrated to digital networks without a connection for critical service applications, such as home and business security, and remote asset tracking and monitoring.

CalAmp's CMM9900 AMPS Radio Conversion Modem operating on Numerex Networks(TM) is specifically designed to solve the analog-to-digital migration challenge, offering a proven path and integrated components for fast, efficient migration to digital.

"Making greater use of limited spectrum is a goal the entire cellular industry and the FCC share. Yet, redeployment from analog to digital is a significant logistics and cost challenge for the M2M industry. Numerex and CalAmp provide the only purpose-built end-to-end solution in the M2M market today aimed at reducing costs, easing application migration and ensuring seamless service associated with analog to digital conversion", said Yankee Group senior industry analyst, Marcus Torchia.

"Numerex has been helping leading M2M solution providers and customers to port their analog-based applications to our new digital networks and solutions," said Stratton Nicolaides, Chief Executive Officer of Numerex. "Our initiative with CalAmp has been well received by a broad cross-section of M2M customers, including VARs, end users, carriers, and OEMs, many of whom we expect will view this cost-effective solution as a reason to complete their M2M digital migration ahead of the Analog Sunset guidelines."

A key component in the migration to digital networks, the CMM9900 AMPS Radio Conversion Modem developed by CalAmp, facilitates plug-n-play conversion for installed AMPS module-based products on the Numerex network. The CMM9900 modem emulates the AMPS module interface on the host application side and automatically converts the data to the GSM/GPRS (digital) protocols on the wireless connection side. The host application does not need to change and can be converted by simply removing the previous module and plugging the CMM9900 modem into the same slot.

"Numerex and CalAmp have created an innovative solution that seamlessly migrates existing analog customers to digital networks with minimal impact to the customer," said Michael Burdiek, President of CalAmp's Wireless DataCom Division. "Our plug-n-play CMM9900 modem provides our customers with an easy, reliable and cost effective migration path to digital networks in advance of the AMPS analog network shutdown."

Numerex and CalAmp have already completed network certification and solution testing and are now in the process of implementing this solution with several customers.
