NSS Labs Testing Finds Norman Antimalware Appliance Delivers Significantly Improved Network Protection When Used with Industry Antivirus Products

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Norman Data Defense Systems announced today that independent lab testing validated that the use of Norman Network Protection (NNP), an antimalware network appliance used as a gateway or inside a LAN, improves network security up to 38% when used in conjunction with a range of endpoint protection products.

"A growing number of enterprises are looking for a network antimalware device to augment the protection offered by the antivirus (AV) products on their endpoints," said Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs, Inc. "Our recent tests show that organizations cannot simply rely on a single layer of antimalware protection. Defense-in-depth strategies are crucial, especially as malware is increasingly delivered via the web and social media."

"Network antimalware and antivirus solutions such as the Norman Network Protection appliance are an important part of a defense-in-depth strategy," Moy said. "A good network AV product can provide an additional layer of protection against network threats which endpoint products may miss."

Defense-in-depth is an accepted industry best practice among information security professionals. It refers to the need for deploying multiple layers of protection so that no single layer or product becomes the single point of failure against malware attack. Ideally, the layers augment and extend protection against threats, providing virtual fail-safes.

"NSS Labs exclusive testing procedures measure and correlate threat protection for network and endpoint security products against a wide range of attacks. This sophisticated series of testing and analysis provides security organizations with the ability to measure and model discrete layers of protection and determine optimum combinations of products," Moy said. "While certain malware will be caught by both the network and endpoint AV products, the non-overlapping protection at each layer effectively extends the cumulative protection."

"Typically malware appliances focus on stopping threats only at the gateway, but increasingly threats are being introduced by internal mobile devices, such as laptop PCs and USB devices connected innocently to LAN segments," said Arvid Gomez, vice president, OEM and Technology. "The ultrafast Norman NNP appliance uses sophisticated malware detection and analysis technology to provide a real-time protection at the gateway and between network segments to proactively protect against threats introduced from a variety sources. NNP performance has now been validated by a leading industry lab and delivers significant risk reduction at fraction of the cost of typical antimalware network appliances. We believe it is the best appliance value available to IT professionals."

Multiple protocols are scanned to stop malicious programs, keeping the network clean and allowing safe traffic to pass through quickly and efficiently. NNP runs on Linux® to maximize throughput and availability and is available as a software solution or as an antimalware appliance, based on Dell® OEM servers.

The NNP Appliance supports Gigabit Ethernet capacity on multiple protocols and delivers high-performance inbound and outbound real-time scans of CIFS and SMB file sharing protocols, Microsoft® Windows® protocols and HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, RPC, TFTP and IRC.
