Northrop Grumman Provides Turnkey Solution for Air Traffic Control Operations at Hawler International Airport, Iraq

LONDON, September 12 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Europe-based subsidiary, Park Air Systems, will provide a comprehensive air traffic control (ATC) system to Hawler International Airport, in Erbil, Iraq, under Turkish prime contractor Mak-Yol, Inc.

"The US$3.2 million contract will include communication, navigation and meteorological systems," said Charles Houseago, chairman of Northrop Grumman's Park Air Systems. "This is a strategically important contract for Park Air Systems as we enter into this new developing territory. It confirms our position as leaders of ATC solutions."

The new air traffic control building is being fitted with state-of-the-art equipment as part of the expansion of the airport. Advanced digital end-to-end communication equipment consisting of the GAREX 220 voice communication control system and PAE T6 multimode digital radio is being installed in the tower.

Installation will include two NORMARC 7000 instrument landing systems with co-located distance-measuring equipment, enabling safe and precise landings under the most difficult visibility conditions.

Meteorological sensors for wind speed, direction, pressure and temperature are also being installed at various locations near the runway and the control tower. Transmission relays will be installed along the runway to determine the runway visual range. All sensors connect back to a central computer that collects and processes the weather data. The data is then sent to the tower for use by air traffic controllers.

Ergonomically designed ATC consoles house the equipment and consist of an integrated aeronautical fixed terminal network and airport information system database offering an efficient service for ATC personnel. A crash alarm system, GPS-based master clock and an airport terminal information system are all installed at various locations within the control tower complex.
