Norplex-Micarta RT500M Shields Wires and Workers During Electrical Repairs

POSTVILLE, IA - Norplex-Micarta, the leading manufacturer of high performance thermoset composite materials and tubes, was recently commissioned by a prominent electric company to produce an electrical shielding unit from their RT500M convolute tubing material. The Norplex-Micarta RT500M tubing is cut in half length-wise and placed over underground electric wires to protect them from forceful impacts made by sledge and jack hammers during repairs. In addition, the thermoset material provides excellent electrical insulation, protecting service engineers from possible electric shock.
Subterranean wires are encased in concrete to offer protection from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations. When repairs are required, the RT500M tubing is slipped over wires after a small opening in the concrete casing is created. When the job is finished, the tubing is removed and stored in the repair truck for use on the next job. The shielding units range from a ¼-inch to a ½-inch-thickness.
RT500M is a glass-epoxy convolute tube produced from medium glass fabric reinforcement. The reinforcement in this material is E-glass, a low-alkali borosilicate glass with excellent electrical and mechanical properties. E-glass comes in the form of an even-weave substrate, providing enough reinforcement to handle force in any direction applied to it.
RT500M can be manufactured in standard lengths of 36" and 48" (914mm - 1,219mm) with inside diameters ranging from 0.750" - 48" (19.1mm - 1,219mm), outside diameters ranging from 0.875" - 50" (22.3mm - 1,270mm), and wall thickness ranging from 0.062" - 1" (1.57mm - 25.4mm). RT500M meets the requirements of MIL-I-24768/2, Type GEE.
