Noise Cancellation IC enhances mobile phone call clarity.

Press Release Summary:

To optimize audio quality at both ends of voice calls, WM2200 incorporates myZone(TM) Ambient Noise Cancellation, transmit path noise cancellation (to 32 dB), Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Wind Noise Rejection, and receive path active noise cancellation (to 20 dB) technology. Features combination improves voice call clarity, regardless of environmental or background noise surrounding caller and receiver. Architecture-agnostic solution can be used for narrowband and wideband voice calls.

Wolfson Announces First Complete Noise Canceling Solution for Mobile Phones

Edinburgh, UK - Wolfson Microelectronics has today announced the WM2200, the world's first complete turn-key noise canceling solution for mobile phones, which is set to revolutionize the audio quality of voice calls at both ends of the call.

The WM2200 incorporates Wolfson's enhanced myZone(TM) Ambient Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology and category-defining features, including transmit path (Tx) noise cancellation, Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), Wind Noise Rejection and Wolfson's unique receive path (Rx) active noise cancellation technology. All of these features combine to deliver dramatically improved crystal-clear voice calls, regardless of the environmental or background noise surrounding both the caller and receiver.

The Tx noise cancellation minimizes the background noise that is picked up by the microphone in the handset and transmits only the caller's voice, delivering up to 32 dB of noise reduction. At the receiver's end, the Rx noise cancellation in the phone delivers up 20 dB of noise reduction by detecting any external noise and creating an equal and opposite signal that neutralizes the background noise, so the receiver only hears the caller's voice. The device can be used for both narrowband and wideband voice calls.

Architecture agnostic, the WM2200 can be easily incorporated into existing phone designs with minimal design effort, utilizing existing voice microphones, and capitalizing on the trend to increase the number of microphones in handsets, typically to enable features such as beam-forming for high quality conference calling and video recording. With power consumption advantages offering a greater than 25% increase in talk time compared to today's ANC solutions, and enabling a 20% reduction in passive component count, the WM2200 significantly extends battery life while simplifying system design.

Duncan Macadie, Product Line Manager for Audio Hubs at Wolfson Microelectronics, said, "As the world's first true noise canceling solution for mobile phones, the WM2200 delivers crystal-clear audio to both the caller and the receiver, regardless of external environment noise. Not only will this technology significantly improve the voice call experience for mobile phone users, it will also result in a significant reduction in the number of calls that are terminated by the handset user, therefore increasing call time and subsequent revenue for mobile phone network operators."

Availability
The WM2200 is available for sampling now, priced at $4.33 in 1k volume.
