Sensor Products Inc. Introduces IDEA® for Real-Time Nip Analysis

Static Nip Analysis System: Ideal for Smaller Machines in the Primary Converting Industries

East Hanover, NJ - September 27, 2005 - Sensor Products Inc. maintains a strong reputation for its ability to develop customized products on request for its clientele. The IDEA® real-time nip analysis system is the newest product developed by the company based on the demands of industry professionals. In fact, IDEA®, which is designed specifically for nips up to 70 inches (178 cm) in length, is the evolutionary result of years of experience analyzing nip rolls in the paper, textile, film and foil industries.

This electronic nip analysis system is the first to evaluate small nip rolls in real-time. IDEA® is perfect for assessing the nip width of machines like printers, laminators and coaters that have soft covers and operate at pressure ranges from approximately 10 to 700 PSI (1 to 50 kg/cm²). The system is a portable, battery-operated integrated electronic sensor element and software package that calculates nip width between rolls with unprecedented speed, accuracy and consistency.

The IDEA® system consists of a series of sensors that are evenly distributed across the face length of the roll. As the nip closes, nip width information is transmitted instantaneously to a laptop, through which a variety of easy to interpret formats are generated. Depending upon the face length of the roller set and user preference, the system allows for spot-checking with a single sensor or a sensor array evaluation of the entire width of the roll for more comprehensive analysis.

IDEA® is advantageous to industry professionals because it allows for standardization across divisions and facilities for monitoring and calibrating equipment. Even more, the system eliminates human visual subjectivity from the realm of nip measurement.

IDEA® product manager Carlos Ruiz said, "Even though nip width has been used to perfect product quality for decades, this is the first real-time electronic system available for smaller machines with rolls under 70 inches (178 cm). I am confident that users will find this new sensor system extremely helpful in optimizing maintenance procedures, prolonging roll life, and improving overall product quality."
