Newest Syncsort Backup Express Release Features Expanded Support for 64-Bit Architecture, Linux and Novell

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Nov. 16 - Syncsort Incorporated announced today that its newest release of Backup Express, the enterprise data protection product, provides expanded, industry-leading support for Novell Open Enterprise Server environments, Windows clusters and 64-bit computing systems. The last is a welcome development to users who have been contemplating the move to 64-bit systems but have been held back by the lack of secure data protection for the platform.

Backup Express 2.35 provides unique agents that support Novell Storage Services (NSS) volumes on Novell Open Enterprise Server Linux and mixed Open Enterprise Server cluster environments, which is especially valuable for transitional migration projects. Other advances included in Backup Express 2.35 are increased support for Intel-based Itanium-2 systems running Linux, HP-UX and Windows, streamlined usability, and automated installation for Linux Backup Express master servers.

Backup Express Offers Industry-leading Support for Novell

Backup Express 2.35 is the most advanced data protection product in the marketplace supporting Novell applications, including support for Open Enterprise Server Linux on all operations. Cluster-aware agents enable consistent, automated and non-disruptive backup for Open Enterprise Server NetWare clusters, Open Enterprise Server Linux clusters, and Open Enterprise Server mixed clusters, continuing Backup Express's outstanding support for Novell clusters. "On paper all companies say they support Novell clusters, but in real life, they don't. The only software that actually does it is Backup Express," says Ludo De Pauws of VDAB ICT.

Backup Express also offers application-aware agents for Novell GroupWise and Novell eDirectory on Open Enterprise Server, including GroupWise 7 on Open Enterprise Server Linux. In addition, NSS volumes backed up from NetWare, Open Enterprise Server NetWare, and Open Enterprise Server Linux can be restored to any of the three systems assuring protection and easy transfer of critical security and permissions metadata.

"For infrastructure, hosting a database, or running mission-critical applications, only Novell offers the powerful security and management tools of Open Enterprise Server, along with a comprehensive ecosystem of supporting partner products, to ensure IT infrastructure is always available," said David Patrick, vice president and general manager of Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services for Novell. "Our work with Syncsort aligns with Novell's commitment to business continuity and simplified security for broad IT infrastructure, as well as for high-end data centers."

Enhanced Support for Intel-based Itanium 2 and 64-bit Operating Systems and Applications Eases Migration Worries

Backup Express 2.35 has improved support for 64-bit processors providing customers with added confidence and tools to protect business-critical, data- intensive enterprise applications. Backup Express 2.35 supports Itanium-2 for HP-UX 11i, Windows 2003 and Linux 2.6 kernel systems such as Novell Open Enterprise Server; all 64-bit Linux 2.6 kernel systems including AMD and Itanium processing environments; Oracle 10g including 64-bit Linux, Itanium-2 Servers, HP-UX and Windows, in addition to continued support for Oracle 10g on 32-bit operating systems.

Continuous Data Protection Yields Optimal RTO and RPO

Backup Express offers continuous data protection (CDP) and includes agents for Network Appliance SnapVault technology for Microsoft Windows, SQL Server and Exchange Server. Syncsort's CDP for Backup Express 2.35 works with Network Appliance SnapVault to offer enhanced Instant Availability through an automated iSCSI connection to backed up snapshot volumes. The Syncsort technology for NetApp SnapVault also incorporates improved options for bare metal recovery for Windows primary servers from a backup data set with Syncsort ExpressDR. All these features ensure that, in the event of a disruption, current data will be quickly available.

Backup Express 2.35 also includes several other improvements to Syncsort's NetApp Open System SnapVault agents, such as Windows 2003 clustering with Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server.
