New Transmitter Families from Rohde & Schwarz Optimized for North and Latin American Market

The digital dividend is creating new challenges for TV operators in North America with the need to switch to a different frequency band. Latin America is also facing a new era as it transitions from analog to digital transmitter networks. Rohde & Schwarz helps network operators master these changes with its new R&S Tx9 family of transmitters. These transmitters are capable of processing the most powerful terrestrial standards, and can therefore also be used to broadcast programs in high-resolution 4K format.

Munich - The digital dividend will have a lasting impact on broadcast network operators. Regulatory authorities in the United States and other countries have instructed them to release frequencies in the UHF band to make them available for other applications such as wireless communications. A natural step is to turn to free channels in VHF band III. Rohde & Schwarz covers these frequencies with its new air-cooled R&S TMV9 medium-power VHF transmitter – a single rack instrument that delivers power levels ranging from 350 W to 4.3 kW. The liquid-cooled R&S THV9 high-power transmitter offers 1.3 kW to 15 kW, and up to 30 kW can be achieved by combining two racks. Innovative technologies such as MultiTX, which makes it possible to house multiple transmitters in a single rack, are what make such high power density possible. The transmitters also offer top energy efficiency and flexibility, enabling network operators and broadcasters to lower the costs arising from high energy prices and rents.

The R&S THU9 TV high-power transmitter for the UHF band offers a maximum output power of 50 kW with up to 42 percent energy efficiency, making it ideal for applications that in the past could only be covered using inductive output tube (IOT) transmitters. IOTs are still used in North America but could be replaced at any time. Thanks to state-of-the-art solid-state technology, the R&S THU9 transmitters provide high redundancy and ensure easy and reliable operation.

The R&S THR9 high-power FM transmitter family offers the latest generation of HD Radio(TM) – the prevailing digital radio standard in North America. The operating power of the R&S THR9 ranges from 2.5 kW to 20 kW in hybrid mode and up to 40 kW in analog FM mode. It is the first FM transmitter on the market to use advanced liquid cooling technology and is the embodiment of the company's many years of experience. Rohde & Schwarz has installed several thousand liquid-cooled TV transmitters.

Latin America is also facing a change as its broadcast networks gradually transition from analog to digital. Since Rohde & Schwarz transmitters are suitable for both analog and digital TV and radio standards, they are optimal for this transition phase. They protect network operators' investment because analog transmitters that have already been purchased can be upgraded to handle digital standards at the push of a button.

Broadcast network operators benefit from the high energy efficiency of Rohde & Schwarz transmitters since they have a major impact on operating costs. The TV transmitters use Doherty technology to achieve these values. With an efficiency of up to 46 % (including cooling) for COFDM standards in the VHF band, energy costs can be more than halved compared with conventional transmitters. With ATSC, an efficiency of up to 50 % can be achieved.

The compact design and high power density save rack space. The MultiTX concept makes it possible to install multiple transmitters in a single rack while leaving space for other components such as a liquid cooling pump unit or bandpass filter. Even complete n+1 systems can be accommodated in a single rack. R&S Tx9 transmitters are so flexible and have such a wide range of possible configurations that they can fulfill almost any requirement. In addition to the diverse range of single transmitter configurations, there is also a transmitter integration kit available that enables users to continue using their existing racks.

The operating concept of the transmitters is based on many years of user experience. It is extremely practical and optimized to meet the needs of network operators. The transmitters are intuitive to use and provide quick access to components and parameters for various tasks – both on site and remotely. The transmitters can be easily integrated into a network management system for parameter and performance data monitoring and diagnostics.

The R&S THV9 and R&S TMV9 transmitter families cover much more than ISDB-T(B) and ATSC. They also support DAB, DAB+, T-DMB, DVB-T/DVB-H, DVB-T2, DTMB and analog TV standards. The R&S THR9 FM high-power transmitter even offers HD RadioTM. All of the R&S Tx9 transmitters are now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
