New Scale Technologies' micro motors drive IAI's auto-tracking steerable laser range finder project for the US Army

Victor, NY - New Scale Technologies' piezoelectric SQUIGGLE micro motors drive a unique auto-tracking steerable laser range finder that Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) is developing for the U.S. Army under a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) contract. IAI has demonstrated a fully functional prototype and is now working to further enhance target tracking performance.

New Scale is a key subcontractor to IAI in the BAA contract, and collaborates with IAI on research and development projects for a wide range of applications.

"New Scale Technologies is an extremely innovative firm," said Benjamin Bachrach, vice-president of IAI. "Their unique line of small size, low power consumption linear actuators is ideally suited for many advanced applications in defense and security."

"IAI is an exceptional R&D company responding to the complex technological requirements of the U.S. government and commercial clients," said Dan Viggiano III, director of the custom products division at New Scale. "We are excited to be working with them on critical new technologies such as this."

New Scale's piezoelectric micro motor technology meets IAI's requirements for small size, lower power consumption, high ruggedness and extreme precision. The SQUIGGLE motor is less than half the size of other piezo motors or traditional micro motors. Replacing traditional motors with SQUIGGLE motors allows engineers to reduce the size and improve the performance of existing systems. SQUIGGLE motors also allow design engineers to add motion features into products where motion was previously not practical.

About New Scale Technologies

New Scale Technologies (www.newscaletech.com) creates disruptively small motion systems based on our patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE® motor, the world's smallest linear motor, and TRACKER(TM) position sensor. The ultrasonic SQUIGGLE motor is smaller, more precise, less expensive, more robust and more power-efficient than other micro motors. The TRACKER position sensor integrates a magnetic sensor with on-chip digital encoder, for smaller size and higher resolution than miniature optical encoders. We create complete motion systems integrating motor and sensor technology with supporting electronics developed with our partner austriamicrosystems.

New Scale's micro motors, encoders and micro-actuator modules enable design engineers to create smaller products including mobile phone cameras, miniature optics and imaging systems, medical devices, electronic locks and miniature aerospace/defense & security systems.
