New PCBN Inserts are Designed for Enhancing Hard Turning Operations

Press Release Summary:

The Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride Inserts are offered in long WL and short WS wiper radii. The CBN150 solid insert grade is designed for high surface finish quality in light interrupted and continuous cuts in hard turning operations. The inserts are available with laser-generated flowing-radii chipbreakers for smooth insert walls and few sharp corners.

Seco Introduces Additions to Extensive Line of PCBN Inserts at IMTS

TROY, Mich., September 10, 2018 – At IMTS 2018, Seco Tools heralded a new grade format and several geometry additions to its expansive line of PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) inserts. The line’s additions are specifically designed to enhance hard turning operations and include expansions to Seco’s extremely tough CH3515 insert grade, a new solid CBN150 insert grade, special long and short wiper geometries and laser-etched chipbreakers.

Seco’s CH3515 insert grade provides high reliability in extremely harsh cutting conditions with heavy interrupted cuts. The complete standard line now includes even more sizes and geometries that optimize all hard turning operations.

The CBN150 solid insert grade provides high surface finish quality during light interrupted and continuous cuts in hard turning operations. More cutting edges per insert also lower cost per edge.

Long WL and short WS wiper radii boost hard turning feed rates and/or surface finish quality. With the WL wiper insert, feed rates can be increased by as much as 100 percent while maintaining surface finish quality. The WS wiper can reduce cutting forces by as much as 15 percent to improve machining in poor stability conditions.

New chipbreakers especially designed for machining applications that transition from a hard part surface into a soft one allow for deeper depths of cut and higher feed rates as compared with existing designs. The laser-generated flowing-radii chipbreakers are far superior to those produced through grinding when it comes to generating smooth insert walls and fewer sharp corners. Both of these improvements result in smoother chip flow and help prevent chipping to enable a much wider range of applications.
