New Okuma Turn-Mill Centre for Large Workpieces

The Japanese machine tool manufacturer, Okuma, has launched a new, multi-tasking turning centre for complete machining of workpieces up to two metres long and 650 mm in diameter. Called MULTUS U4000, it is available in the UK through sole agent, NCMT. A smaller MULTUS U3000 can also be supplied, with up to 1,500 mm between centres.

The 22 kW main spindle of the MULTUS U4000 has a 91 mm bore (optionally 112 mm) and generates 700 Nm of torque at up to 4,200 rpm. Alternatively, a 32 kW drive can be specified, providing a torque of 955 Nm.

The machine is fitted with Okuma's own linear scales for high accuracy positional feedback. Servo motors deliver feed rates of up to 50 m/min in the X and Z axes, 40 m/min in the 300 mm Y-axis.

The -30 to +210 degree swivelling B-axis tool spindle with HSK-A63 taper (optionally Capto C6) is rated at 22 kW / 12,000 rpm and develops a torque of 120 Nm. The tool magazine has 40 stations as standard, but is optionally available with a capacity of 80 tools.

Together with the C-axis on the main spindle, the machine is capable of fully interpolative, 5-axis (X,Y,Z,B,C) machining of freeform surfaces, with SuperNurbs smoothing.

The specification of MULTUS U turn-mill centres can be extended further, giving users an ex-works product that is closely tailored to their needs. For example, a lower turret can be supplied, having 12 live tool stations and a 7.1 kW / 40.4 Nm / 6,000 rpm drive. A 22 kW counter spindle can be ordered in place of the tailstock. Numerous other accessories and software options are also available. Collision avoidance is standard in the Okuma OSP-P300 control, which has a 19 inch screen.
