New Image Sensor from OmniVision Technologies, Inc. is Designed for High-resolution Front- and Rear-facing Smartphone Cameras

Press Release Summary:

OmniVision Technologies, Inc.’s new image sensor is 0.9 micron, 1/2.83-inch optical format 24 megapixel (MP) image sensors and is built with their PureCel® Plus stacked die technology. The sensor comes in four models.  The OV24B1Q is a 4-cell Bayer imaging sensor with in-pixel binning for optimal sensitivity and low-light performance. It has pad locations on the top and bottom of the chip to reduce module size in the x-direction, making it ideal for front-facing cameras in thin-bezel infinity display phones. The OV24B2Q is also a 4-cell Bayer imaging sensor with in-pixel binning. It has type-2, 2x2 microlens phase detection autofocus (ML PDAF), making it ideal for main cameras due to video and low-light performance. The OV24B1B is a monochrome imaging sensor with low-light sensitivity. It is ideal for rear-facing multi cameras for Bokeh and zoom. The OV24B10 is a standard Bayer imaging sensor. It is ideal for main cameras with its 24MP resolution.  It works as a single camera or as part of a multi-camera arrangement for Bokeh and zoom. All four models output high-resolution streaming video in a multiple formats, including 24MP at 30 frames per second (fps), 4-cell binning 6MP at 60fps, 4K2K video at 60fps, 1080p video at 120fps, or 720p video at 240fps.

OmniVision's New 24-MP Image Sensor Family Enables High-End Smartphone Cameras With Top Image Quality and Advanced Features

Sensors Provide Front- and Rear-Facing Multi-Cameras With Extremely High-Resolution Video and Still Capture; Excellent Autofocus and Low-Light Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the second generation of its 0.9 micron, 1/2.83-inch optical format 24 megapixel (MP) image sensors, built on the PureCel® Plus stacked die technology. The OV24B sensor family is designed for high-resolution front- and rear-facing smartphone cameras, with cutting-edge technologies and design enhancements that enable differentiated features and excellent imaging performance.

The new image sensor family is available in four versions:

  • OV24B1Q: 4-cell Bayer imaging; in-pixel binning for optimal sensitivity and low-light performance; and pad locations on the top and bottom of the chip to reduce module size in the x-direction, ideal for front-facing cameras in thin-bezel infinity display phones
  • OV24B2Q: 4-cell Bayer imaging; in-pixel binning; type-2, 2x2 microlens phase detection autofocus (ML PDAF), ideal for main cameras due to video and low-light performance
  • OV24B1B: monochrome imaging; excellent low-light sensitivity; ideal for rear-facing multi cameras for Bokeh and zoom
  • OV24B10: standard Bayer imaging; ideal for main cameras due to high 24MP resolution, as a single camera or as part of a multi-camera arrangement for Bokeh and zoom

"As sub-micron pixel technology continues to mature in tandem with evolving performance expectations, it is enabling extremely high-resolution imaging and multi-camera designs, which continue to be growing market trends. These trends apply to both front-facing and rear-facing smartphone cameras," said James Liu, product marketing manager at OmniVision. "The new OV24B sensor family, with its on-chip re-mosaic, 2x2 ML PDAF, and high-speed video capability, can address the demands of these growing market trends, enabling mobile cameras to provide the very best user experience for autofocus, low-light performance, and high-resolution video and still image capture."

The on-chip re-mosaic feature, available in the OV24B1Q and OV24B2Q, makes it possible to have real-time conversion between high-performance quarter resolution and full resolution 24MP outputs. This feature provides greater viewfinder accuracy and a fast, seamless transition between taking still images and video.

The OV24B2Q's new 2x2 ML PDAF enables faster autofocusing over standard PDAF, even in extremely low light conditions.

All four versions can output high-resolution streaming video in a variety of formats, including 24MP at 30 frames per second (fps), 4-cell binning 6MP at 60fps, 4K2K video at 60fps, 1080p video at 120fps, or 720p video at 240fps.

The OV24B is in production now. For more information, product samples or a demonstration, please contact your OmniVision sales representative at sales@ovt.com.
