OKI Launches the HSDS Cable Series, Multi-Purpose Differential Transmission Standard Cables

-Delivering high-speed transmissions up to 5Gbps-

TOKYO, June 28, 2019 --Oki Electric Cable Co., Ltd., an OKI Group company specializing in electric cables, today announced that it launched the “HSDS Cable Series”, differential transmission*¹ standard cables that can be used as digital interface cables for multiple purposes in April 2019, as a new addition to its product lineup.

Digital interfaces used in industrial devices are based on conventional interface standards but are often customized to meet specifications of the equipments. This results in longer delivery times as the cables are designed and manufactured individually. It has therefore been difficult to accommodate needs for such custom cables in small quantity and short delivery times. In order to commercialize the “HSDS Cable Series”, OKI Electric Cable has analyzed the specification requests received from the customers, identified and standardized the most versatile cable structures, and achieved stable transmission quality at high speeds of up to 5 Gbps.

Most digital interfaces use LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling)*² for their differential transmission technology, but its theoretical maximum transmission speed is 1.923 Gbps. In recent years, however, more and more devices are requiring a faster digital interface to cater for higher performance and functionality. Using OKI Electric Cable's hallmark transmission property simulation technology, the cable structure of the "HSDS Cable Series" was optimized for differential transmission to achieve more stable transmission quality as well as support transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, which far exceeds the conventional theoretical maximum transmission speed. This product offers an excellent transmission performance to support high-speed interfaces, making it highly versatile and easy-to-use for a wide variety of applications.

This series offers a wide range of cable products that are easy to customize for the interface used. In future, OKI Electric Cable will continue to focus on providing better products and services that lead to greater customer satisfaction.

[Glossary of terms]

*1 Differential transmission

A method of transmitting data by transmitting signals of opposite phase to a pair of signal lines.

This transmission method can reduce the signal amplitudes compared to the method that transmits data

with only one signal line (single-ended transmission). It is often used in high-speed interfaces today

as it offers faster data transmission as well as excellent resistance to common mode noise.

*2 LVDS

A technical term formed from the initials of Low Voltage Differential Signaling.

An interface technology that transmits signals with small voltage amplitudes using differential transmission.

*3 Sliding

Repetitive reciprocating movement of the cable while bending it in a U-shape and sliding it linearly.
