Ultraflex Demonstrates Automated Induction Brazing of 6 Copper Pipes Using Dragon 15 Brazing Robot
Aug 05, 2019] A recent UltraFlex demonstration of their Dragon 15 Induction Brazing Robot showcased its application for flameless brazing of refrigerator compressors, heat exchangers, home appliance components and complex HVAC assemblies.
In the demonstration, six copper pipes (9.5mm in diameter) had to be brazed to each other using induction brazing. Induction brazing saves time, energy costs, improves productivity and eliminates operator variability.
To automate the brazing process and ensure a consistent and reliable brazing result, UltraFlex Dragon 15 Brazing Robot, programmed to move to each joint and apply power for a pre-programmed amount of time, had been used. Dragon 15 integrates the Ultraflex W15 (15 kW) induction heating system with a Universal Robots cobot (UR 5) to achieve a fully automated brazing process.
A wire feeder, mounted to the robot, fed the alloy onto the copper joints. A nitrogen nozzle was also added to reduce oxidation of the joints and help to minimize the brazed joints cleaning procedure.
At output power of 15 kW and target brazing temperature of 1475 °F/ 800°C, it took 10 seconds to braze each joint. As a result of the fast and clean induction brazing, UltraFlex achieved consistent and strong joints. In addition to being energy- and cost-efficient, the brazing process had been completely safe for the environment: the lack of open flame meant no smoke, waste heat and noxious emissions.
