New Demonstration by UltraFlex Shows Bore Heating of a Steel Pipe Using Induction

[Oct 22nd, 2018] In pursuit of proving the limitless possibilities of induction heating for manufacturing purposes, UltraFlex Power Technologies has demonstrated how bore heating of a steel pipe could be achieved using induction heating.

UltraFlex provides the most advanced digitally controlled induction heating solutions in the industry and is regularly coming up with proofs of how induction heating can replace flame-based heating, saving time, energy and costs. In this test scenario, a 11.8” (300 mm) steel pipe had to be heated to 2012˚F (1100˚C), with the part to be heated having 1.97” (50 mm) outside diameter and thickness of 0.16” (4 mm).

An ID induction coil had been used, along with an induction heating system from the company’s UltraHeat W series. UltraHeat W is an advanced, cost-effective 5-15 kW induction heating equipment, utilizing the latest switching power supply technology. Power of up to 10 kW had been supplied to achieve the target temperature in this case.

The test results showed that the productivity rate for these test conditions was heating 0.16” (4 mm) of the steel pipe per second. In addition to being quick, the heating process was also energy- and cost-efficient, since induction heating is able to convert up to 90% of the energy consumed into heat in the part. The heating process was also quite simple to accomplish, so dependency on the operator’s skill was eliminated as a factor for the quality of the end result. Finally, this was a thoroughly green operation, since induction heating does not burn traditional fossil fuels, and does not pollute the environment.
