New Brocade Solution Dramatically Reduces Data Backup and Recovery Time for Mainframe Customers

Industry's First Tape Pipelining Capabilities Now Available from IBM and Sun to Speed Enterprise Business Continuity Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 19 -- Brocade® (NASDAQ:BRCD), the leader in networked storage solutions that help enterprises connect and manage their information, today announced new capabilities that dramatically improve the backup and recovery of critical data in mainframe environments. The new solutions are available immediately from Brocade Partners IBM and Sun Microsystems, and utilize tape pipelining technology to accelerate read/write performance for FICON® -based tape libraries over a Wide Area Network (WAN). These industry-first features also improve disaster recovery and business continuity operations by enabling faster backup of data to remote locations.

The new Brocade FICON tape pipelining technology is now available on the Brocade USD-X and Brocade M3000 distance extension products. The new feature facilitates the replication of data to the IBM VTS and Peer-to-Peer VTS and the Sun StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager 5 (VSM5), which are virtual tape solutions for large-scale mainframe data protection infrastructures.

The new capabilities enable improvements in data throughput of up to 200 percent and in overall backup and recovery performance by as much as 70 percent. In industries where seconds of downtime can cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in lost revenue or productivity, fast and reliable data restores are vital to a reliable business continuity strategy.

Faster tape vaulting over distance allows companies to electronically transfer backup data to disaster recovery facilities rather than rely on physical transportation of tape or on a courier service -- thereby reducing the possibility of lost, damaged, or stolen tapes, and improving data security and availability. This architectural approach also allows companies to spread their storage infrastructure over multiple power grids and over greater distances, reducing the impact that any single data center outage or regional disaster might have on the entire network.

"High-performance tape vaulting over distance allows customers to extend the affordability and reliability of tape to provide a robust and affordable business continuity solution for today's largest global companies," said Tom Buiocchi, Brocade Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.
