New Baycusan® C Product Line: Five New Ingredients for Looking Great

Bayer introduces polyurethane-based cosmetic ingredient line at Suppliers Day 2009

May 21, 2009 Pittsburgh, May 21, 2009 - Bayer MaterialScience LLC introduced its new polyurethane-based Baycusan® C cosmetic ingredient product line to the North American market at the recent 2009 Suppliers Day Conference.

The Bayer Baycusan® line consists of four solvent-free aqueous polyurethane dispersions serving as film formers and a polyurethane powder as a sensory aid.

The new cosmetic ingredients were assigned the following INCI names:

o Baycusan® C1000 - polyurethane-34

o Baycusan® C1001 - polyurethane-34

o Baycusan® C1003 - polyurethane-32

o Baycusan® C1004 - polyurethane-35

o Baycusan® C1005 - methoxy PEG-17/Methoxy PEG-11/HDI Crosspolymer

Aqueous polyurethanes are non-allergenic and friendly to human skin. Bayer MaterialScience brought aqueous polyurethane technology to the high level of purity and consistency: an exclusive Bayer MaterialScience process manufactures products free of cross-contaminants, preservatives and organic solvents.

The distinctive characteristic of all Baycusan® film formers is their unique structure. It enables a fine balance of film properties: water resistance, flexibility and a non-greasy, non-tacky lightweight afterfeel on skin and hair. Ease of washability prevents product build-up on hair and clogging of pores on skin. While substantive on the skin, these films are clear and odorless and form a breathable and non-irritating barrier on skin and hair. At low concentrations the polymer also acts as a binder, entrapping actives in the flexible, continuous matrix and ensuring uniform coverage and protection. Baycusan® C1000 and Baycusan® C1004 polyurethanes are suitable for decorative cosmetics with long-lasting wear and soft non-tacky feel. Water and rub-off resistance combined with flexible hold make these products especially desirable in mascara and eye-liner formulations.

For skin care products, Baycusan® C1000 polymer offers beautiful aesthetics and sensory attributes. Formulations containing this product do not show piling or "balling" effects. Because of their exceptional film forming ability, both Baycusan® C1000 and C1003 polymers can be used in masks and various topical medicated products where they can enhance delivery of actives.

Baycusan® C1000 dispersion is a truly multifunctional film former which enables the development of many elegant yet long-lasting cosmetic products.

Baycusan® C1001 dispersion was developed for hair styling. The dispersion forms a highly flexible, clear film on hair. Hair styling products containing Baycusan® C1001 dispersions provide durable style with flexible hold. The hair looks and feels naturally healthy and lustrous, and not stiff. In addition to outstanding curl retention in high humidity, Baycusan® C1001 dispersion imparts a good conditioning effect on hair: treated hair is much easier to comb. The elastic memory of the polymer is responsible for this good style retention.

Bayer MaterialScience developed a proprietary process to produce polyurethane microspheres from polyurethane dispersions. Baycusan® C1005 powder is made of uniformly sized and shaped microspheres of 15-25 microns with a smooth texture. This product produces novel tactile effects: distinctly dry and non-tacky, but with a very soft afterfeel on skin. Besides functioning as a sensory aid, the powder also offers high oil absorption capacity, which helps with creating elegant, lightweight skin care and decorative products for oily or combo skin types. According to sensory evaluations in liquid and pressed powder makeup formulations, Baycusan® C powder enhances both the luminosity of colors and their even distribution on skin. It also improves the bond between makeup and skin so that the powder does not rub off onto clothing so easily. In pressed powder makeup formulations, Baycusan® C1005 powder imparts cohesive strength to the product, preventing it from cracking during a drop test.

"By launching the Baycusan® product line into the Personal Care market, Bayer MaterialScience confirms its ability to be a cutting-edge innovative company focusing on growth and diversification," said Yuliya Berezkin, manager, New Business Development/Personal Care North America, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "The introduction of our Baycusan® C product line marks the beginning of Bayer MaterialScience as a raw material supplier to cosmetic industry."
