New Application Note Shows How Adding a Tiny Position Sensor to Existing Digital Still Cameras Reduces Power Use, Improves Autofocus and Zoom Performance

Victor, NY - July 30, 2009 - New Scale Technologies has released a new application note describing how lens systems in digital still cameras and video cameras can be improved with the addition of a tiny new position sensor. The company's TRACKER position sensors are small enough to fit into existing camera designs. The sensors can be used to either upgrade existing open-loop stepper motor systems, or to replace existing optical encoders with a smaller, more precise sensor. In either case, the precise position feedback enables faster, more precise focus and/or zoom. The resulting lens system will use less power and cut the "wait time" for taking a photo. The increased precision will also allow designers to use smaller optics in their next product iterations.

About New Scale Technologies

New Scale Technologies (www.newscaletech.com) creates disruptively small motion systems based on our patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE® motor, the world's smallest linear motor, and TRACKER(TM) position sensor. The ultrasonic SQUIGGLE motor is smaller, more precise, less expensive, more robust and more power-efficient than other micro motors. The TRACKER position sensor integrates a magnetic sensor with on-chip digital encoder, for smaller size and higher resolution than miniature optical encoders. We create complete motion systems integrating micro motor and sensor technology with supporting electronics (ASICs) developed with our partner austriamicrosystems.

New Scale's micro motors, encoders and micro-actuator modules enable design engineers to create smaller products including mobile phone cameras, electronic locks and intelligent fasteners, nano-scale fluid control including lab-on-a-chip systems, medical devices including miniature drug pumps and endoscopes, optics and imaging systems, automotive modules, lasers, aerospace and defense systems, cryogenic and MRI-compatible instruments, and consumer electronics including micro fuel cells.
