Networking Devices foster fiber transition without penalty.

Press Release Summary:

Typically comprised of chassis, management module, and redundant power supply, ION devices enable service providers to offer tiered services with end-to-end SLAs. Fast and Gigabit Ethernet fiber network interface devices (NIDs) are also available, and all slide-in modules help reduce cost of fiber integration projects by protecting investments made in current copper based devices. ION NIDs support up to 10k jumbo frames and bandwidth allocation to limit upstream and downstream traffic.

Network Managers Can Breathe a Sigh of Relief - Secure, Remote Network Management Just got Easier!

- Transition Networks Drives New Standard in Optical Networking With Global Availability of ION Platform

Transition Networks Inc., the fiber access technology expert, a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-GM: JCS), today announced the global availability of The ION Platform, a new family of intelligent optical networking devices designed to drive a new standard in optical networking. Built to meet the increasing demand of today's networks, the ION takes manageability and security in optical networking to a new level. Network managers can now take advantage of fiber technology without having to compromise on reliability, scalability or security, and they can do it at a cost savings.

With the growing demand for Ethernet services, the new ION platform enables service providers to offer tiered services with end-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLAs), while increasing customer satisfaction and keeping capital expenses (CapEx) to a minimum.

"Our customers demand more manageability and security as their networks expand and become more complex," said Patrick Schaber, Director of Marketing at Transition Networks. "The ION platform is our next leap in innovation for delivering high-quality, reliable and scalable network devices."

Product Features

A typical application would include the ION chassis, an ION management module and a redundant power supply. A variety of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet fiber network interface devices (NID) are also available to meet customers' specific network requirements. All slide-in modules are designed to help network managers reduce the cost of their fiber integration projects by protecting the investments made in current copper based devices, while still allowing them to experience the benefits offered by fiber optic cabling.

The ION NIDs support up to 10k jumbo frames and bandwidth allocation to limit upstream and downstream traffic. The ION NIDs offer complete Ethernet OAM support including 802.3ah (Link OAM). The x3230 series include Ethernet OAM support for 802.1ag (Service OAM) and Y.1731 (Performance Monitoring) to ensure visibility across the entire network.

Configuration, management and monitoring of the ION NIDs can be performed from a web-browser, command line interface (CLI), via telnet or the console port, or with a 3rd party SNMP system.

Network Management

With the growing demand for network up-time, the use of a management module in the ION chassis is essential. The management module allows remote monitoring of the current status of each slide-in module. Each module has an extensive set of features and functions that can be controlled. A network administrator can securely configure, monitor, and troubleshoot each numbered ION slide-in-module remotely through a web-browser, a command line interface (CLI), via telnet, or with a third party SNMP application. Secure access control to the management module is provided by support via management VLAN, SSH, SSL, 802.1x. and SNMPv1 and v2.

Backwards Compatibility

While The ION Platform offers new levels for remote management, security, and control, providing backwards compatibility to Transition Networks' Point System installed base is a key feature customers will appreciate. By using the ION Adapter on the Point System management modules and the Point System converter modules, customers can install and manage their Point System devices in he ION chassis, thus preserving their current investment in Transition Networks products.

Product Configuration Transition Networks' Network Interface Devices are available as a chassis card for The ION Platform or as standalone versions. The following table provides more information on the specific models.
