May 2, 2003 - Mobile, AL - N-TRON, Corporation today announced a new family of Advanced Fast Ethernet switches for the industrial market. The 500 Series switches offer the advanced functions required by many PLC and DCS Manufacturers. The 500 Series switches provide the high performance, standardization, and determinism of Fast Ethernet switching technology in a rugged DIN-Rail, panel mount and optional rack mount industrial package.

All members of the 500 Series are designed to solve the most demanding industrial communications requirements while providing high throughput, minimum downtime and high EMI noise immunity. These switches are encased in rugged industrialized steel enclosures that extend the environmental range including maximum operating temperature to 85°C (185°F). Each enclosure is a compact DIN-Rail system with redundant power inputs. As an alternative, the product can also be panel or rack mounted. They are fully IEEE 802.3 compliant and feature simple plug and play operation.

The 508TX and 5016TX have eight and sixteen port 10/100BaseTX ports respectively. The RJ-45 ports support full or half duplex operation, speed, wire configuration, and flow control are automatically negotiated. In full duplex mode, the switch can support up to 2.6 Gb/s aggregate bandwidth.

The 509FX and 517FX include all the features found on 508TX and 516TX with the addition of an ST or SC multimode fiber optic port. The fiber segment length can be up to 2 km with standard multimode fiber optic cable. 509FXE and 517FXE offer single mode fiber optic cable transducers with 15 km, 40 km, and 80 km versions available.

N-View OPC Switch Monitoring Option
The N-TRON N-View OLE for Process Control (OPC) Server Software can be combined with popular HMI software packages to add network traffic monitoring, trending and alarming to any application using N-TRON switches configured with the N-View option. N-TRON's N-View OPC Server collects 45 different traffic variables per port and 5 system level variables per switch. This information can provide a complete overview of the network load, service quality, and packet traffic. OPC client software can use N-View OPC Server data to resolve network problems quickly and improve system reliability.

Advanced Management Functions Option
The 500 Series offer several management functions that can be easily configured using the COM Port (DB 9 Connector located on the right side of the switch).

IGMP Snooping - Internet Group Management Protocol is a feature that allows the 508TX switch to forward multicast traffic intelligently.

Port VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network allows you to segment the switch in order to create two or more separate local area network domains.

QoS - Quality of Service provides prioritization of network traffic in order to provide better network service. The primary goal of QoS is to improve the latency of prioritized Ethernet packets required for ring management, real-time and other interactive applications.

Trunking - Port trunking (aggregation) enables two ports to be linked together and function as one uplink to another 500 Series switch configured in the same manner, thereby increasing the bandwidth between switches. This configuration can provide increased bandwidth and redundancy to applications requiring high levels of fault tolerant operation.

Port Mirroring - This 500 Series function allows the traffic on one port to be duplicated and sent to a designated mirror port. Port mirroring can be used to monitor Ethernet traffic on the designated source port using the assigned mirror port.
