Emerson Unveils New Smart Network Switch for the DeltaV(TM) Digital Automation System

New smart switches are preconfigured out-of-the box, plug 'n' play for use in DeltaV system network

AUSTIN, TEXAS (December 11, 2008) - Emerson Process Management has unveiled a new line of smart network switches specifically designed to plug and play within a DeltaV(TM) digital system network. These switches come completely pre-configured to work within the DeltaV network, requiring no setup of the switching functions by the user. In addition, they provide an easy-to-use security feature to help prevent unauthorized network connections to the switch.

Emerson's new smart switches contain software specifically designed to provide switch monitoring capabilities and security features for the DeltaV system. They use patent pending Emerson "one-click lockdown" software for these security functions.

"These smart switches are as easy to use as an unmanaged switch but with all the features of a managed switch for network security and monitoring," said Bob Huba, product manager for DeltaV Security. "Smart switches are configured for use out-of-the-box in the DeltaV system. No configuration is required to gain the added security benefits of the DeltaV smart switch."

"Our customers tell us they want the ease of use of an unmanaged switch but they must have the security and monitoring capabilities of a managed switch," says Duncan Schleiss, vice president of product marketing, Emerson Process Management. "The DeltaV smart switches give the customer exactly what they are asking for - easy and secure."

"The great thing is that we are doing this with the low cost and high reliability of commercial off-the-shelf technology that customers have come to expect," Schleiss continued. "The smart switch is part of the DeltaV product family and is tracked as part of service agreements, and follows the same 10-year life cycle availability as all our products."

DeltaV switches provide Megabit and Gigabit speeds over wired and fiber communications and are available from 8-port DIN rail mounted switches to a modular 24 port rack mount switch with 8 wired ports and up to an additional 16 wired or fiber optic ports. Both the DIN rail and rack mount switches provide a modular solution so users can optimize the cost and footprint to more exactly meet their specific needs.

DeltaV systems are a core component of Emerson's open standards-based PlantWeb® digital plant architecture which substantially reduces project costs, with customers typically saving over 30% on installed costs.

About Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) Technology
In 1996 Emerson championed the use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology in control systems. The use of COTS allowed Emerson to deliver easy-to-maintain, easy-to-connect, cost effective solutions for the DeltaV system while staying up with the latest technology. Over the years, many control vendors have followed this same path. The use of COTS reduced cost, but also increased the configuration complexity for users due to the generic nature of the COTS devices.

Emerson has provided preconfigured COTS devices such as Cisco switches and Dell computers - tested, set up and ready to go for the DeltaV system - but still these were pure COTS devices just preconfigured for the DeltaV system. These COTS devices were not integrated into the system and could also be easily misconfigured by a user in ways that impacted the performance of the control system.

Emerson Process Management has now moved on to a new era by introducing the first purpose-built COTS devices - DeltaV network smart switches. These purpose-built devices have the cost advantage of a COTS device combined with custom-built software and features that make them easily integrated into the DeltaV system.

The purpose-built switch also allows for advanced security features that are easy for a DeltaV system user to implement - an increasingly important product feature in today's hostile environment.

Emerson is moving the COTS switches from a separate device on the control system into an integral part of the DeltaV system solution just like a controller or workstation.
