Extreme Networks Readies Network for Full-Scale Voice Deployment

Networking Pioneer Delivers Simple Two-Tier Architecture for an Open Converged Network With Voice-Class Aspen Switching Solution to Fortify the Edge

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 10 - Demonstrating its ability to deliver innovative solutions for networking, Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXTR), is once again redefining the enterprise network with its new two-tier architecture and high-performance Aspen(TM) switching solution, which for the first time delivers true voice-class availability at the edge of the network. Extreme Networks' two-tier architecture enables enterprises to build an open converged network that can easily accommodate new applications, such as voice, while achieving five 9s availability and better levels of security in a simple design.

As IP Telephony, wireless connectivity and other new applications become more widespread in the enterprise, IT organizations must re-evaluate network design. While these new networks provide enterprises with numerous benefits to enable them to compete today, their IT teams need to ensure that the network delivers continuous uptime, voice-quality connections, and security, while being easy to manage. "New network infrastructure components have to go beyond mere support for voice traffic and actually deliver voice traffic," said Abner Germanow, research manager with IDC. "Realizing the benefits of voice and other converged applications requires pushing the expectations and requirements of network infrastructure to achieve new levels of uptime, latency, and security."

Two-tier Architecture
To address the challenges of building a new converged network, Extreme Networks offers users a simple two-tier network architecture. This approach requires fewer network layers and switching elements, all of which result in a lower total cost of ownership.

The two tiers of the network architecture consist of a Unified Access tier and an Intelligent Core tier. The Intelligent Core runs on the award-winning BlackDiamond(R) 10K switch. For the edge of the network, Extreme Networks offers users its Unified Access Architecture(TM), which now includes a new switching solution, the Aspen 8800 series.

"Simplifying my network into a two-tier design with Extreme Networks' Aspen switch makes sense for a number of reasons," said Stephen Bosch, enterprise architect for Luxottica Retail, a member of Luxottica Group, the international leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing, distribution and retail sales of prescription eyewear and sunglasses, and the sponsor of "Give the Gift of Sight Foundation"(1). "With Extreme's Unified Access Architecture, I have an infrastructure that is completely ready for voice and data applications, and a design that is simple to manage. The Aspen switch is especially suited for the wiring closet as it delivers higher levels of availability, redundant hardware and Power over Ethernet ports. This means the network remains available, both consistently and predictably as it supports a wide range of devices and services. The Aspen platform also gives Luxottica Retail the capacity we require to accommodate the growth and expansion of our business."

Aspen: Fortifying the Edge
The Aspen switch leads the market in offering support for robust, full-scale IP telephony deployments. The new switching solution enables users to address the critical requirements for voice production deployments: voice quality connectivity, increased uptime, better security and simple management. The five 9s availability of Aspen resulting from its redundant design is enhanced by a modular, highly-available, operating system, ExtremeWare(R) XOS(TM), and the industry's only LAN resiliency protocol for voice -- Extreme Networks' Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) protocol.

The new Aspen switching solution enables the concept of the 10/100/1000 Power over Ethernet (PoE)"Universal Jack." Addressing the power, density and performance compromises of the first generation of PoE switches, the Aspen switch reduces the number of switching elements and eliminates the middle-tier of a traditional three-tier network. The design of the Aspen switch allows users to more easily add PoE ports with new blades or power modules, instead of having to add entire new switches.

"Since Aspen eliminates access layer limitations, users can now finally benefit from the simplicity of a two-tier network," said Varun Nagaraj, vice president of product management for Extreme Networks. "Our Aspen switch eliminates such compromises as PoE, density, security and performance that users had to settle for in the past."

The Aspen switch offers voice-class availability with its redundant system design, modular operating system (ExtremeWare XOS) and network resilient protocols. The new switch has high density line rate gigabit and 10 gigabits ports, high-density PoE support, low latency and jitter support and integrated wired and wireless networking access. The comprehensive security feature sets, include user and host integrity, threat detection and response, and a hardened infrastructure.
