Original Press Release:

Bay Microsystems Ships First 40G Network Processor

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 26 -- OFC/NFOEC Conference -- Bay Microsystems, Inc., the world's fastest growing network processor company, today announced the sampling of its Chesapeake 40G Network Processor and Traffic Manager. Announced in June 2006, Chesapeake remains alone as the world's only commercially available 40G Network Processor and Multimedia Traffic Manager.

Unprecedented in its ability to accommodate a full 40G at line rate, Chesapeake is ideally suited to process and manage multiple segments of 1G, 10G, 20G or 40G data paths. While consuming a mere 16 watts of power, Chesapeake's pipelined processing core delivers an unmatched internal throughput capacity of 122 million packets per second (sufficient for 100G processing), and a search rate of 622 million searches per second. Chesapeake's functional integration, coupled with its massive processing performance, easily delivers the most cost effective solutions for carrier class networks. Network equipment OEMs are now realizing Metro Ethernet solutions at a cost structure approaching $25 per 1GE port.

The dramatic increase in consumer demand for quadruple play services, especially video, is presenting tremendous burden on the existing network infrastructure. Chesapeake is specifically designed to process and direct a new class of packet-based traffic, allowing service providers to deliver and manage an array of new services, which can meet and exceed customer expectations for quality of service.

"We have used numerous network processors and ASICs over the years, always facing the compromise between programming flexibility and deterministic response," said Li Wei Pu, vice minister of product development at ZTE. "Chesapeake far exceeds the capabilities of anything we have seen in the market. Bay Microsystems is meeting the needs of our next generation switch/router platforms with dramatically reduced cost per port and system power."

Like Bay's Montego(R) and Biscayne(R) NPUs predecessor solutions at 10G, Chesapeake is the first of its kind in the industry. Chesapeake delivers state-of-the-art, 40G line rate performance, while achieving unmatched levels of feature integration and programmability. Chesapeake is unique in its capacity to accommodate the full spectrum of packet-based services, including carrier class Metro Ethernet, MPLS, IPv4/v6, pseudo-wire as well as legacy (POS, PPP). Chesapeake allows customers to maintain a common application code base for a broad spectrum of applications and across a wide variety of service platforms.

"The market is moving aggressively toward a 20G/40G backplane for network infrastructure platforms," explained Scott Clavenna, senior analyst for Heavy Reading. "Aggregating and processing multiples of 10G on a line card will be the baseline configuration for most of the metro and long haul applications moving forward. Consumer-based services such as Broadband Data, Voice and High Definition Video have forced the market to leapfrog the 10G backplane in favor of 40G and beyond."

Chesapeake is available today in sample quantities. For additional information, contact the Bay Microsystems sales department at 408-437-0400 or sales@baymicrosystems.com. In a related announcement, Bay Microsystems, Inc. also revealed today formal details surrounding release and availability of its Lighthouse 40G development environment and its Nextware(TM) application-programming interface for Chesapeake customers.

"We are ecstatic about our development progress with Chesapeake, and are now prepared to meet market demand as our customers aggressively pursue initial product releases," said Charles Gershman, president and CEO of Bay. "The market is red hot for a new generation of high bandwidth packet-based solutions, and the excitement around Chesapeake continues to grow at a breakneck pace. We are now singly focused on developing our next generation products, while enabling our partners with a world-class design environment and a full complement of application support services."
