Original Press Release:

Portwell's New Desktop Network Communication Appliance Provides Increased Scalability with Lower Running Costs

FREMONT, CALIF. — CAD-0230, the latest network communication security appliance from American Portwell Technology, Inc. (, is a desktop unit with a compact footprint based on the low-power embedded 22nm Intel® Atom™ processor C2000 SoC (system-on-a-chip), formerly codenamed “Rangeley”, and includes Intel® QuickAssist acceleration technology. The new CAD-0230 network appliance features up to 16GB DDR3L SO-DIMM, two Intel I211 GbE ports and four GbE ports from SoC Quad MAC, two bypass segments on SoC quad ports, one SATA and CFEX storage interface, one mini-PCIe slot and reserved PCIe x1 connector, RJ-45 type console and two USB ports, 40W DC 12V power adapter, optional rackmount and a compact footprint of just 210mm (W) x 210mm (D) x 42mm (H) or 8.27" x 8.27" x 1.65".

American Portwell’s new CAD-0230 network appliance is the ideal solution for security networking applications such as network intrusion prevention/detection; spyware control; content filter; P2P control; instant message recording for system integrators, OEM customers, software developers; and SOHO and remote/satellite office.

Higher Scalability and Higher Efficiency

According to Oliver Chen, American Portwell Technology’s product marketing manager, networking and security applications continue to grow in complexity, so systems need increased computational resources to handle increased workloads that can now include cryptography. “That’s where Intel® QuickAssist Technology really helps,” Chen says. “It is specifically designed to optimize the use and deployment of algorithm accelerators on the kinds of applications where CAD-0230 is the ideal choice because it makes it easier for developers to integrate built-in accelerators into their designs. When combined with Intel® Atom™ processor C2000 SoC, it makes CAD-0230 an extremely powerful tool.”

“Aimed specifically at networking and communications applications,” Chen explains, “the Intel Atom C2000 processor-powered CAD-0230 is highly scalable—up to eight cores with integrated I/O—and highly efficient because of significantly improved performance-per-watt. What’s more,” he adds, “Intel Atom processor C2000 enables CAD-0230 to handle up to 64GB of datacenter-class ECC DDR3 RAM and support built-in controllers for Ethernet, USB 2.0, SATA and second-generation PCI Express. It is a perfect solution for low-power virtualization host system.”

Long Product Lifecycle Support

Frank Shen, American Portwell’s vice president of product marketing believes CAD-0230 is flexible enough to provide an effective solution not only for enterprises with large networks but also is an efficient low-cost security solution for small office and home office environments. “Keeping costs down at this stage of a business is an essential ingredient for growth,” says Shen, “as is a long product lifecycle. Portwell always designs and develops its products with one eye on the bottom line and the other eye on making things as future-proof as possible. And as always,” Shen continues, “our customers not only benefit from the most up-to-date technology and features, but they also gain peace of mind from the long life cycle support inherent with every Portwell product.”
