Original Press Release:

Portwell New NAR-7100 Network Appliance Utilizes Latest Intel Xeon 5500 Platform

FREMONT, CALIF-March 30, 2009 - American Portwell Technology, Inc., (http://www.portwell.com) a wholly owned subsidiary of Portwell, Inc., an innovative network solutions provider, and a member of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance, announces the high performance NAR-7100 networking appliance and 10G PCI Express Gen2, supporting both dual-core and quad-core Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series based on the latest generation Intel® microarchitecture, formally codenamed Nehalem.

Portwell's new NAR-7100 server grade network appliance features a 2U rack mount chassis, dual sockets for the Intel® Xeon® processors E5540 or E5504 -with an integrated memory controller, high speed Intel® QuickPath Technology link connections between the two processors as well as Intel® Turbo Boost, Virtualization and Hyper-Threading Technologies -and the associated Intel® 5520 I/O Hub to meet high performance computing requirement with up to 36 PCI Express Gen2 lanes. Ten DDR3 memory DIMMs support up to 80 GB system memory. The new NAR-7100 not only provides high CPU computing performance, but also supplies excellent Ethernet performance using PCI Express Gen2 solution at a very competitive price. Portwell's communication/network appliances are innovative and uniquely designed to furnish a wide-range of features.

The NAR-7100 2-socket, 2U rack network appliance provides maximum performance while supplying a variety of Ethernet interfaces and Ethernet ports, helping reduce energy and deployment costs. The high concentration of computing power and redundancy makes the NAR-7100 the perfect choice for high performance networking applications. Portwell's new NAR-7100 network appliance supplies the necessary computing power for UTM, IPS, IDS, Anti-virus, Firewall, VPN, Content Filtering and much more to enhance our customers' applications.

Enterprise-class Performance in a Compact Footprint According to Polo Huang, VP of Communication Appliance B.U., Portwell, Inc., the modular design for front-access network ports on the new NAR-7100 can be configured as copper, SFP, copper bypass or fiber bypass module, and will also support modules based on Intel PCI Express Gen2 Ethernet controller.

Customers using traditional Copper or Fiber modules can now choose the NAR-7100's programmable bypass module. In practice, the programmable bypass mode allows network packets to flow in and out unattended when the appliance is shutting down. The programmable next boot-up status means that the Bypass or Open mode can be determined in advance before a system shuts down. This means that the system can be predetermined to reboot to the preferred status and is immediately ready to serve. Bypass mode status can be changed instantly by software commands. Each Bypass segment has its own WatchDog Timer (WDT), therefore, Bypass behaviors can operate independently.

"All in all, the new NAR-7100 network appliance offers software providers the opportunity to meet the needs of today's security-conscious Enterprise by delivering enterprise-class performance in a compact footprint, at a competitive price," says Huang. "The NAR-7100 system will satisfy customers who look for a variety of Ethernet card module designs and need the flexibility to configure for different allocations." In addition, the Portwell network appliance NAR-7100, a new OEM solution set delivered by Portwell, gives Network Equipment Providers a blueprint for radical consolidation of their network elements, which significantly lowers the cost of deployment.

"Moreover, complex IT environments typically mean higher IT costs," Huang explains. "Portwell's NAR-7100, however, includes Light out management (LOM) features which help to simplify software company deployment and consolidation tasks." "What's more," he adds, "Portwell delivers fully assembled and intensively tested machines that don't require expensive integration services." Huang confirms that the NAR-7100's remote management options include iKVM, IPMI PET, SOL, Remote Power on/off, Virtual Storage boot and installation to help increase the productivity of network management.

Combining High-performance Multi-core Processor Technology from Intel and Flexible 10G Networks Portwell's NAR-7100 network appliance allows networking application customers to consolidate solutions and lower development costs. The NAR-7100 includes the multi-core and multithreaded 10G PCI Express Gen2 Ethernet portfolio, a new product suite that includes the Portwell Gen2 bypass (fail-over) function. The new NAR-7100 gives networking application customers the ability to connect these high-performance multi-core/multithreaded processors directly into flexible 10G networks, providing the foundation for cost-effective next-generation networks.

"The latest Intel® Xeon® processors deliver top performance for high-throughput network/data storage and security applications," says Steve Price, marketing director, Intel Performance Processor Division. "This robust performance helps customers consolidate previously separate applications into one network appliance, such as the Portwell NAR-7100, for cost-effective designs."
