NAB 2015: 4K Encoders from Rohde & Schwarz Support Live Broadcasts

At NAB, Rohde and Schwarz will showcase its product portfolio for 4K video transmission. The company's encoding and multiplexing solutions support the digital, high resolution 4K video format. In 2014, they were used during many live 4K broadcasts - from tennis matches to rock concerts.

Munich, – In December 2014, satellite operator Eutelsat broadcast the tennis finals of the Italian Serie A1 live in 4K via HOT BIRD. Rohde Schwarz was responsible for coding the signals with the RS AVHE100 headend. The high resolution video content was broadcast on the Italian television channel SuperTennis. Viewers were able to see the rapid movements of the tennis ball, even when it was moving at 200 km/hour.

In 2014, Germany also had two world premieres in UltraHD live broadcasting, and the live encoder from Rohde Schwarz played a key role at both events. The encoder uses an HEVC algorithm developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. In April, Sky Deutschland used the encoder to broadcast a soccer match live in UltraHD via satellite at 50 frames/second - a world first. In mid-November, the live encoder was used for data compression during the live UltraHD satellite broadcast of the Linkin Park concert in Berlin ? yet another world premiere. At the end of December, Rohde & Schwarz set new standards once again with its partners Astra and SES Platform Services when the Fantastischen Vier concert was broadcast live in ultra-high resolution.

The compact R&S AVHE100 headend from Rohde & Schwarz was ideal for these projects, processing the 4K program data into a ready-to-broadcast transport stream. This system solution provides realtime HEVC encoding of 4K/UHD at up to 60 frames per second. The R&S AVHE100 encodes and multiplexes video and audio signals, and adds signaling data in line with the current standard. The headend supports the most common international digital broadcast standards. Other optional functions include encryption, monitoring and an innovative redundancy system (R&S CrossFlowIP).

The Rohde & Schwarz encoding solutions are on display in the South Lower Hall at booth SL1105.
