CEVA Unveils New Family of Multimedia Solutions for High Volume, Low Cost Mobile Consumer Electronics

Mobile-Media-Lite(TM) Offers Optimized Multimedia Solutions at Smallest Silicon Size to Lower Overall Cost of Video-Enabled Portable Multimedia Devices

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 19 -- CEVA, Inc. (NASDAQ:CEVA), a leading licensor of innovative intellectual property (IP) platform solutions and DSP cores for wireless, consumer and multimedia applications, today unveiled a new family of application-optimized multimedia solutions enabling the development of high-volume, low-cost mobile consumer electronics with advanced multimedia capabilities. Building on CEVA's established Mobile-Media(TM) architecture, the Mobile-Media-Lite(TM) family offers a complete feature set for a range of applications such as MobileTV Players, entry-level Portable Media players (PMPs) and multimedia phones.

CEVA's first offering in the new Mobile-Media-Lite family is the MM2200, a highly integrated, single processor multimedia solution. Leveraging on the powerful and widely used CEVA-X1620 processor, all multimedia-related processing as well as application and system tasks are handled by a single processor. This effectively eliminates the need for any additional processors, related memories and peripherals in the system, significantly reducing the silicon size and bill of materials for the development of multimedia SoCs. Catering to the MobileTV player market, MM2200 supports H.264 decode at CIF resolution 30fps while simultaneously decoding an AAC stream and synchronizing the audio and video, forming a complete drop-in solution. MM2200 also supports MPEG4 decode up to VGA resolution 30fps, making it a perfect fit for entry-level PMPs and MP4 players.

"The mobile multimedia market has become very fragmented as product developers look to differentiate their products and target different applications and segments. Clearly, the 'one size fits all' approach to multimedia SoC development does not meet the market requirements for low-cost mobile consumer electronics," said Eran Briman, Senior Director, Strategic Marketing at CEVA. "We are responding to this market dynamic with a solution set that is optimized for the specific requirements of the entry level space. Developers get all the proven flexibility, performance and integration benefits of our full-fledged Mobile-Media2000 solution, but with optimized feature sets and reduced die size which translate into crucial cost savings for our customers."

CEVA also plans to introduce a second member in the Mobile-Media-Lite family, the MM2100 -- shortly. Specifically designed for heterogeneous architectures that already include a CPU, the MM2100 utilizes CEVA's multimedia technology as a dedicated multimedia co-processor, supporting H.264 decoding up to SD resolution in addition to a complete set of audio and imaging codecs. The MM2100 architecture utilizes any available CPU processing power for control oriented tasks, part of the video codec processing or the application layer. MM2100 enables flexibility through its software programmable architecture and eliminates the need for hardware blocks commonly used to accelerate video processing in multimedia SoCs.

The Mobile-Media-Lite solutions are fully programmable platforms that feature a high-performance CEVA-X1620 DSP core, a small set of level-1 associated memories, a multimedia-optimized DSP subsystem, a complete suite of optimized multimedia codecs and a multimedia applications layer. Using a fully programmable DSP enables support for all future multimedia standards without the need for hardware upgrades, and a comprehensive development platform enables licensees to incorporate additional hardware and software components.
