Freescale General Purpose Applications Processor to Increase Design Options and Reduce Time-to-Market

Highly anticipated i.MX27 applications processor now commercially available

ORLANDO, Fla. (Freescale Technology Forum) - June 26, 2007 - Engineers looking for high resolution video, security, design flexibility, excellent power management and re-use in one general purpose multimedia applications processor now can purchase the Freescale ARM9(TM)-driven i.MX27 processor. Freescale is featuring the i.MX27 processor at its annual technology forum in Orlando, Fla., June 25-28.

Optimized for a broad spectrum of mobile consumer and industrial applications, the i.MX27 processor combines Freescale's Smart Speed(TM) technology, an H.264 hardware encoder/decoder, USB, Ethernet, security features and a powerful ARM9 core. With the addition of an on-chip Ethernet MAC and the H.264 D1 resolution video codec to the performance-enhancing Smart Speed architecture, the i.MX27 processor brings an increased level of video, graphics and connectivity to mobile multimedia devices.

The low-power video acceleration and applications software in a single chip gives designers the ability to increase functionality and decrease power drain and footprint. The ability to capture video and play it back real-time makes the i.MX27 particularly well-suited for the video surveillance and video and voice over Internet Protocol (V2IP) cordless and mobile phone markets. The video experience and security in a low-power package make the i.MX27 a great choice for point-of-sale applications, as well.

"The i.MX27 multimedia applications processor is a simple, yet effective, combination of an ARM® core, USB, and Ethernet that is ideal for the embedded markets and companies we serve," said David Doherty, vice president, Semiconductor Marketing, Arrow Electronics, a supply channel partner for original equipment manufacturers, contract manufacturers and commercial customers. "Combined with Freescale's brand and commitment to the embedded markets, we believe the i.MX27 processor will find a home in a broad array of applications."

The same features that make the i.MX27 attractive to consumer handheld device manufacturers are favored for industrial applications. By adding LCD control, DMA channels, memory interfaces, several communications units, security, an ATA host and low 1.2V operating voltage, the i.MX27 processor becomes a prime candidate for both industrial instrumentation and healthcare-related applications.

"Based on our customer feedback, this 32-bit processor is expected to appeal to a wide range of market segments," said Paul Marino, director and general manager of Freescale's Multimedia Applications Division. "We are delivering a very competitively-priced solution designed to exceed our customers' needs and enable rapid development."

Availability
The i.MX27 multimedia applications processor is commercially shipping in volume and can be ordered direct from Freescale or through its distributors. Suggested resale price is $14.86 (USD) for 10K quantities.
