Overview
The Cisco MDS 9000 family, resold by IBM, is designed to provide a multiprotocol capable SAN infrastructure with performance and advanced intelligence to help address demands for the security, performance, and manageability features required to consolidate geographically dispersed SANs. To address the needs of both low-cost workgroup and enterprise data centers, new features for the Cisco Systems MDS 9216 Multilayer Switch (2062-D01) and MDS 9509 Multilayer Director (2062-D07/T07), include the following capabilities:
o Cisco 8-Port Internet Protocol (IP) Services Line Card supporting Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) and Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol (FCIP)
o Tri-Rate Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) Fiber Optic Transceivers
o Multimode Fibre Channel Fiber Optic Convenience Cables
o Compact Flash (CF) Memory Card

The Cisco 8-Port IP Services Module supports low-cost iSCSI host connection to Fibre Channel storage. Optionally, it enables FCIP support for extended distance fabric operation while preserving advanced Virtual SAN (VSAN) capabilities across LAN and WAN connections. The 8-Port IP Services Module brings to the marketplace the multiprotocol-capable SAN infrastructure highlighted in IBM's Statement of Direction in Hardware Announcement 103-044 , dated February 17, 2003.

For added convenience, Cisco MDS 9000 platforms now support Tri-Rate SFPs which support three modes of operation, 1/2 Gbps Fibre Channel and 1 Gbps Ethernet. Additional convenience is provided with multimode Fibre Channel fiber optic cables across the MDS 9000 product family, as well as support for external 512 Mb CF Memory Module on MDS 9500 products to assist service maintenance.
