Multilayer Stacked Capacitor targets automotive applications.

Press Release Summary:

Automotive Grade, KPS Series X7R ceramic capacitor uses lead frame technology to vertically stack 1 or 2 MLCCs into parallel circuit in compact SMT package. Lead frame isolates capacitors from PCB, offering resistance to mechanical and thermal stress and preventing audible, microphonic noise when bias voltage is applied. Suited for flexible PCBs, unit has capacitance values of 0.1-47 µF, operates over -55 to +125°C temperature range, and is offered in 10, 16, 25, 50, 100, and 250 V options.

KEMET KPS Series Multilayer Stacked Capacitor Now Available for Automotive Applications

Greenville, South Carolina - KEMET Corporation (NYSE: KEM), a leading manufacturer of tantalum, multilayer ceramic, solid aluminum, film, paper and electrolytic capacitors, today announced the release of its Automotive Grade (AEC-Q200 qualified) KPS Series (KEMET Power Solution) stacked X7R multilayer ceramic capacitor.

The KPS Series utilizes proprietary lead frame technology to vertically stack one or two MLCCs into a parallel circuit in a single compact surface mount package. The lead frame isolates the capacitors from the printed circuit board, offering advanced mechanical and thermal stress performance and addressing concerns for audible, microphonic noise that may occur when a bias voltage is applied. Stacking allows for up to double the capacitance in the same or smaller design footprint when compared to traditional surface mount MLCC devices.

"Automotive engineers require a superior, high capacitance, high reliability solution for severe applications," said Tim Hollander, KEMET Product Line Manger. "KPS Auto, with its bulk capacitance and outstanding flex performance, clearly demonstrates KEMET's continued commitment to serving our customers in the automotive industry."

Providing up to 10mm of board flex capability, KPS Series capacitors are environmentally friendly and in compliance with RoHS legislation. Currently available in X7R dielectric, these devices are capable of Pb-Free reflow profiles and provide lower ESR and higher ripple current capability when compared to other dielectric solutions.

Designed for demanding environments such as power supplies, typical applications include smoothing circuits, DC-to-DC converters, input/output filters, piezoelectric and mechanical noise reduction, and improving flex performance in board flex application.
