Megger's MFT Puts Industry to The Test

Combining rugged construction with accuracy and versatility, Megger's latest MFT1553 multifunction tester is ideally suited for use in testing and certifying industrial electrical installations. Designed to be easy and safe to use, even in difficult operating conditions, the MFT1553 provides all of the test functions needed to satisfy the requirements of the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations.

It also offers Bluetooth connectivity, which allows test results to be downloaded directly to a laptop computer, handheld PC, or even a Smartphone running Megger's Powersuite software. This is a major benefit for industrial users as it eliminates the need to use data cables with their easily damaged connectors, and provides big time savings compared with the manual recording of test results.

For maximum user convenience, the MFT1553 is optionally available as combined package -MFT1553 On-site - that includes the instrument itself and copy of the software.

Among the many timesaving features of the MFT1553 is an automated RCD test facility. When testing RCDs, users simply plug the tester into the socket and initiate the test sequence. They then stand next to the RCD, and reset it each time it trips as the testing proceeds. Without further user intervention, the instrument carries out all five of the tests prescribed by the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, and stores the results. The stored results can be shown on the instrument's display simply by repeatedly pressing the "Lock" button.

Since RCDs are often located some distance from the sockets they supply, large timesaving are achieved, as users no longer have to continually return to the instrument, after resetting the RCD, to initiate each separate stage of the test sequence.

Like all Megger MFT1500-series testers, the new MFT1553 units feature an ergonomic design that was developed in close consultation with users. The instruments are also easy to operate, allowing tests to be performed rapidly, with minimal risk of mistakes. To protect users, the testers incorporate an extensive range of safety features. These include live circuit warning, auto-discharge after insulation tests, and colour-coded controls that reduce the risk of operator error.

In addition to automatic RCD testing, the MFT1553 provides facilities which include continuity testing with an adjustable-threshold buzzer; continuity measurement up to 99.9kohms; insulation testing at up 1,000V; standard, selective and DC-sensitive RCD testing; RCD ramp testing; non-tripping and high-current loop tests; three-phase loop tests; and prospective short-circuit current measurement.

It also has backlighting not only for the display, but also for the selector switches, making the instrument particularly easy to use in poorly lit areas. Other features include an illuminated switch probe, and a durable fitted carrying case.
