Dynapar Introduces Multi-Turn Absolute Encoder for Extreme Environments

Gurnee, IL - July 7th, 2009-Dynapar's harsh-duty AcuroTM AR62 absolute encoder is now available with true multi-turn resolution capability. The battery-less and gear-less design relies on pulse-wire technology to provide up to 16 bits of multi-turn resolution while keeping a slim profile for space-critical applications.

True Multi-Turn Positioning
Instead of using traditional geared optical discs that add complexity and cost, or batteries that can suffer current leakage and short lifetimes, the AR62 uses pulse-wire technology to maintain multi-turn position. When a rotating magnet passes by the pulse-wire, it creates a short burst of electrical energy that can be counted and stored in memory, even in power-off situations. The result is a simple, reliable, and compact design that can withstand severe shock and vibration up to 200g.

Rugged Construction
Oversized bearings are utilized in the AR62 to provide up to three times the normal life of a traditional absolute encoder at rated shaft loading. Even with these oversized bearings, the new multi-turn encoder has an installed height of only 32mm, making it the most compact size in its class. Special coatings & seals are used to protect the electronics in wash-down and even submersible applications. Magnetic sensing technology helps the encoder achieve a wide -40 to +100C temperature operation range and resist harsh shock and vibration. When coupled together, all these design elements make the encoder perfect for such demanding applications as construction & agricultural vehicles, oil drilling equipment, and mobile cranes. When ordered with stainless steel housing and IP69k labyrinth seal, the encoder is even suited for marine and shipboard applications as well as food & beverage machinery.

Multiple Communication Options Makes Integration Easy
Customers wanting to upgrade from existing fragile optical encoders (which typically use glass discs) will benefit from the absolute encoder's numerous communication options. A Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) or BiSS (Bi-Directional Synchronous Serial) interface is available for high-speed data transmission and reduced wire count. The prolific CAN Open industrial bus is also available, a popular choice for many industrial automation applications. In addition, customers wanting to convert from potentiometers or transducers will appreciate the analog output option, which will be available in voltage (0-10V) or current (4-20mA) format.

Price and Availability
The multi-turn AR62 absolute encoder is built to order and available for the general market. Dynapar will market the encoder under its Hengstler brand name, and list pricing starts around $650. For custom OEM applications and volume pricing, contact a Dynapar representative at 800-873-8731 or visit the web at dynapar.com/AcuroXR for technical information.
