Exar Launches XRT95L53 - EXtendAR 48M(TM) - The Industry's First Universal OC-48/STM-16 Multi-protocol Framer -- Ideal for Ethernet Over SONET/SDH (EOS) Systems



October 17, 2005 - Fremont, CA, - Exar Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR), a leading provider of high-performance, mixed-signal silicon solutions for the worldwide communications infrastructure today added EXtendAR 48M(TM) (XRT95L53) to its product portfolio - the industry's first universal OC-48/STM-16, Quad OC-12/STM-4 & OC-3/STM-1 multi-protocol framer. This is the first in a family of multi-protocol over SONET/SDH framers extending Exar's technology leadership into next generation metro core and transport network markets. Deployments of these highly integrated devices are enabling the convergence of triple-play services together with data over SONET/SDH. The device employs a unique set of flexible packet framing and encapsulation features combined with optimal SONET transport capabilities. This makes EXtendAR 48M(TM) an ideal solution for legacy systems as well as add/drop multiplexers, Optical Edge Devices (OED's), multi-service provisioning platforms and edge router applications.

EXtendAR 48M(TM) supports GFP in combination with virtual concatenation (high order and low order) and LCAS, as well as a comprehensive suite of framing functions such as LAPS, PPP/BCP, and ATM, which are configurable on a per channel basis. In addition, EXtendAR 48M(TM) is the industry's first device to incorporate 48 DS3/E3 and fractional DS3/E3 framers on a single chip. With this unprecedented level of integration of legacy and multi-protocol over SONET/SDH framing functions in a single device, system vendors no longer have to implement them elsewhere in the system. EXtendAR 48M(TM), in addition to the SONET interfaces, supports an OIF compliant SPI-3 interface enabling the device to interface directly to industry standard network processors, Ethernet switches or RPR MAC's. The device also supports Exar's industry first G-header interface that provides framing and encapsulation support for Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, RPR, MPLS or proprietary client data to be transported over SONET.

Distinguishing Features
EXtendAR 48M(TM) supports flexible encapsulation and framing features including GFP, LAPS, ATM & PPP/BCP. These features enable the use of the XRT95L53 in legacy framing as well next generation Multi-protocol over SONET applications.

The device supports 48 DS3/E3 and fractional DS3/E3 framers on a single chip, which reduces system cost in next generation SONET/SDH applications. In the metro core, DS3/E3 is still widely deployed and by integrating the DS3/E3 framer functions in the XRT95L53, customers can achieve substantial cost savings by reducing the total number of components required in their next generation designs.

The XRT95L53 supports high order and low order virtual concatenation together with LCAS in a single device enabling optimal utilization of SONET bandwidth for various types of client data as well as ensuring dynamic allocation of bandwidth to meet critical service-level agreements. The device also supports a proprietary G-header interface, electrically compatible with SPI-3 interface, required to map several types of standard data formats.

In addition, EXtendAR integrates an STS-1 cross-connect that is capable of adding/dropping traffic at an STS-1 level of granularity to external devices such as the Voyager (XRT86SH328). This feature enables the design of a single line card supporting T1/E1, DS3/E3, OC-3/OC-12 and several data ports. The STS-1 cross-connect also allows the XRT95L53 to use one of the OC-12/OC-3 interfaces as a client access port enabling the device to serve metro access applications as well.

Product Details
EXtendAR 48M(TM) maps and de-maps data traffic between the SPI-3 interface and the standard SONET/SDH interfaces. The device supports STS-48/STM-16 interfaces as well as four STS-12/STS-3 interfaces on the SONET/SDH line side and a standard OIF compliant SPI-3 interface on the system side. The device supports a flexible on-chip 4-bit SerDes interface that can be configured in either STS-48 or a quad STS-12/STS-3 mode.

The device supports the mappings for any standard combination of STS-48/AU4-16, STS-12c/AU-4c or STS-3c/AU4 or STS-1/AU3 as well as STS-1/VC-3-xV or STS-3c/VC-4- xV. Also, the device provides pointer processing to accommodate timing offsets between optical interfaces. The device terminates section overhead and line overhead on OC-48/STM-16, 4xOC-12/, 16xOC-3 interfaces, and supports options to terminate and/or monitor STS path overhead (POH) and transport overhead (TOH).

The XRT95L53 device supports a range of framing and encapsulation features including GFP, LAPS, ATM & PPP/BCP. The device also includes 48 on-chip DS3/E3 framers that enable mapping of DS3/E3 payloads to and from SONET/SDH payloads along with performance monitoring functions at the DS3/E3 level.

A standard 16-bit microprocessor interface provides performance monitoring and alarms required by GR.253 and ANSI T1.105 and supports tandem path monitoring for network failure sectionalization as required by ANSI T1.105. Other features of this product include SONET frame scrambling and descrambling, and support for 50 millisecond APS.

Applications
EXtendAR 48M(TM) when combined with other leading Exar SONET/SDH mappers/demappers and transceivers such as the XRT94L33, XRT94L43 and XRT91L80 enables modular, flexible and low cost Add/Drop Multiplexer and DS3 aggregation systems.
