FCI Develops SFF-8484 Multi-Lane Headers
ETTERS, PA. (March 21, 2006) - FCI, a leading manufacturer of connecter and interconnect systems, has developed 32-position, vertical and right-angle headers to connect multi-lane SATA or SAS cables between I/O controller cards and backplanes for disk storage arrays within a storage enclosure or server. The headers provide the mating interface to cable assemblies that conform to the SFF-8484 specification. The connectors can support up to four serial lanes of SATA or SAS signals and required sideband signals. The high-speed, serial interface is designed to support differential signaling at speeds of 3.0 Gbps.
"The vertical headers are offered with options for through-hole solder, press-fit or surface-mount termination allowing designers to choose the termination technique best suited to their board design and planned manufacturing process," said Frank Yeh, FCI Global Product Manager. "The right-angle headers are designed for through-hole solder termination."
All headers feature stamped retention clips that provide additional mechanical strength and stability after the connectors are soldered to the host board. The cable end on a multi-lane cable also engages with these clips to secure the cable end and protect against accidental unmating.
The multi-lane headers are RoHS-compatible. Typical prices are in the range of $1.00 to $1.80 each for 2,000-piece order quantities, depending on the connector configuration. Samples are available for delivery, with production lead times from stock to 7 weeks.
