PIA Group's Unique New Xcel(TM), Multi-Function Platform Has Proven Ideal for Electronics Industry Applications

CINCINNATI, OH (July 8, 2002) - Xcel(TM), a unique new multi-function platform from PIA Group that enables customers to reduce time to market, rapidly adapt to changing volumes and model mix, and minimize capital investment, has proven ideal for electronics industry applications.

A standard offering from PIA, both the Xcel and Xcel-LT models are equipped with standard construction and electrical controls, plus identical Human-Machine Interface (HMI).

Both models are reconfigurable and reusable, and can be adapted to a wide array of electronic applications, including vision guided pick-and-place, force sensing, vision inspection and part placement for both ceramic and PC circuit boards.

Capable of communicating with a plant's Factory Information System (FIS), the Xcel can read bar code on parts and determine both processes and tooling, all within 100 milliseconds.

In addition, Xcel can be linked with an innovative wireless remote diagnostic process, allowing engineers at Weldun International, Ltd., part of the PIA Group Inc., to troubleshoot software or machine problems at manufacturing facilities anywhere in the world.

Using low cost Ethernet and utilizing Rockwell software products and programming tools, data can be transferred from machines equipped with a wireless LAN access point to a set of main host servers via a wireless LAN bridge, allowing seamless data transfer from the production equipment to the servers.

A total of 10 Xcels have been installed in electronics facilities to carry out a variety of applications since the start of the year and are performing impressively with CPK ratings that well exceed the statement of work.

The Xcel features an Adept Cobra Series Robot, available with optional Adept Cartesian modules, and Adept VME controls. A distributed controls package, PC touchscreen interface and SMEMA interface are standard.

Operating either semi-automatic or automatic, with manual or auto loading and unloading, the Xcel is completely networkable with host communication, data collection, programming and backup.

Optional features include an overhead instrument enclosure and lighting, as well as conveyor interfaces. The Xcel's tough, durable welded steel frame with powder coat finish is available in multiple sizes and footprints, and worldwide support and service is provided.

PIA Group, Inc. engineers and builds innovative, automated manufacturing systems and solutions with a full range of in-house capabilities. Those capabilities include simultaneous engineering, project management, engineering, manufacturing, machine validation, training, installation and service support. For more than 50 years PIA's two subsidiaries, Precision Industrial Automation Inc. and Weldun International, Ltd., have created an array of engineering, assembly and test solutions to maximize customers' efficiency and productivity. Industries served include appliances, automotive, consumer products, electronics, medical devices and healthcare, and office furniture.
