Movea's MotionCore(TM) Will Be Showcased on ST-Ericsson NovaThor(TM) Mobile Platform at MWC 2012

Companies to offer Industry First Motion Processing Core on NovaThor platform for Smartphones and Tablets

Grenoble, France - Movea, a world leader in motion-processing and data fusion technology, announced today that it is working with ST-Ericsson, a world leader in the development of wireless platforms and semiconductors, to integrate Movea's MotionCore software modules and motion processing IP with ST-Ericsson's NovaThor(TM) high-performance platforms for smartphones and tablets. A demonstration of the integration will be running in the ST-Ericsson Partner Zone (booth 7D45 in Hall 7) at Mobile World Congress 2012 (Barcelona, Spain: 27 February - 1 March 2012). The demonstration will feature MotionCore running on the NovaThor-powered HTC Sensation and using onboard MEMS sensors to drive a touchless gesture interface on an ST-Ericsson Snowball Android tablet connected to a TV.

MotionCore is the first family of sensor agnostic IP for dedicated motion processors and has been specifically designed with mobile devices in mind. MotionCore architectures are optimized for motion sensing and data fusion applications and run implementations of Movea's proprietary, best-in-class SmartMotion® algorithms. For sensor enabled mobile devices, such as the NovaThor-powered HTC Sensation, MotionCore delivers increased performance with dramatically reduced power consumption at a significantly lower cost than software only solutions.

Bryan Hoadley, EVP of WW Sales and Marketing and President of Movea Inc., explained, "More and more mobile devices are enabled with MEMS motion sensors to provide enhanced navigation and location services, more natural User Interface controls, and other innovative motion features making them smarter and more aware. Adding MEMS sensors to a mobile phone design brings incredible value but can come with other design tradeoffs. We're very excited to be working with a leader like ST-Ericsson who sees how MotionCore can minimize or eliminate these design tradeoffs and push MEMS sensors to proliferate even farther into new applications and deliver more value to handset and tablet manufacturers."

The NovaThor(TM) platform used for the demonstration incorporates the latest Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) dual-core technology with a high-end 3D graphics accelerator in a high-performance, low-power and cost-optimized solution for all major open software platforms.

"Our NovaThor line of platforms represents ST-Ericsson's best-in-class application processors matched with an industry-leading mobile broadband modem," said Björn Ekelund, Head of Ecosystems and Research at ST-Ericsson. "As a leading supplier to the top mobile device manufacturers, we're delighted to be working with an innovator like Movea who is breaking new ground in motion processing and mobile device user interface technology."

Movea and ST-Ericsson will be co-marketing the NovaThor platforms with MotionCore to handset manufacturers, mobile operators and device manufacturers. Applications for the MotionCore powered NovaThor platforms include indoor/pedestrian navigation, activity monitoring, motion gaming, augmented reality and gesture-based device/application control. Movea's MotionCore solution is sensor agnostic, allowing supply chain freedom. It is also scalable and flexible so it can be optimised to meet the price/performance requirements of the device with optional modules such as gesture recognition, inertial navigation or activity monitoring included as required. MotionCore IP cores are available for licensing now from Movea.
