Motorola's Open Communications Servers Lead the Wave at GLOBALCOMM


On-Site Demonstrations Illustrate Depth/Breadth of Applications

Carrier-grade Common Platform Becoming a Force in the Telecom Industry

TEMPE, Ariz., May 9 / - At GLOBALCOMM(TM) 2006 Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) will demonstrate evidence of its leadership in aligning the communications industry around open, carrier-grade common platforms, ecosystem coordination and delivering the resulting communications server products.

Product and proof-of-concept demonstrations will include Motorola's generally available AdvancedTCA® based communications servers as the foundation of key IMS functions, plus views into Motorola's future MicroTCA(TM) and 10Gbps switch fabric ATCA® platform products.

"Motorola has been selected for the majority of known outsourced ATCA based communications server projects, most of which are control plane applications. We believe this indicates that ATCA communications servers are the emerging trend for this class of network functionality," said Wendy Vittori, corporate vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola. "Our 10Gbps Ethernet switching proof-of-concept will show how open, standards-based communications servers will extend into data plane applications such as the emerging high definition IPTV. And with the recent announcement that we will be including MicroTCA platforms in our portfolio, the benefits of communications servers extend from the core to the edge of the network."

On-site demonstrations will illustrate the wide range of potential applications for Motorola's AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA communications servers, including implementations in IMS, VoIP, IPTV and WiMAX infrastructure.

o High availability failover of multiple high-definition video-on-demand
streams and thousands of SIP-based VoIP calls on a Motorola
Avantellis(TM) 3000 series ATCA communications server. This
demonstration will showcase Motorola's NetPlane® Software, including
Service Availability(TM) Forum specification implementations, pre-
integrated with MontaVista Linux and validated in a deployment-ready
communications server.

o Motorola's Centellis(TM) 3000 series ATCA communications server,
designed to allow network equipment providers to take advantage of an
open, standards-based common platform while helping to protect their
investment in existing high availability software and applications.
Developed as a proof-of-concept in collaboration with, and based on,
Intel architecture and including content from an ecosystem of
independent software vendors, the communications server acts as a
single platform for multiple IMS network elements.

o MicroTCA proof-of-concept demonstrating access and host applications
that can be brought to market quickly and cost effectively using an
open, carrier-grade platform integrated, validated and certified by
Motorola:

o A video conference system, as a proof-of-concept of a host
application
o A wireless base transceiver station, as a proof-of-concept of an
advanced wireless broadband access application, such as WiMAX

o 10Gbps switching in a Motorola Centellis 3000 series ATCA
communications server, enabling support for high-bandwidth data plane
applications. The proof-of-concept demonstrates a significant increase
in ATCA switching capacity and backwards compatibility with currently
deployed 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) systems. Developed in collaboration
with Interphase, Surf and Artesyn Technologies, the demonstration
shows the ability of Motorola's communications servers to scale
according to application needs and continues the company's history of
helping protect its customers' technology investments. Motorola is
working with early access customers for 10GbE switching in its ATCA
communications servers.

Motorola also will showcase a custom designed telecom rack and ATCA frame-level integration illustrating Motorola's Professional Services capabilities, including architectural consulting, development consulting and custom product design. Working collaboratively with the customer, Motorola engineers developed the innovative, low-profile power distribution unit (PDU) that handles significantly more power than earlier generation PDUs as well as integrating serviceability elements such as hot-swappable circuit breakers and a shelf alarm module. This approach enables rapid prototyping, speeding time-to-market and minimizing engineering outlay for the customer.

Communications servers from Motorola also will be demonstrated around the show floor on several strategic alliance and standards organizations booths, underlining the power of the communications server ecosystem and highlighting work with Intel, Interphase, MontaVista, and Wind River.

Industry adopts a common platform environment
Several recent developments demonstrate the industry's move towards the adoption of a common platform environment.

o Recent Yankee Group research states that leading telecom equipment
manufacturers (TEMs) are embracing the concept of common platforms and
estimates a 30% improvement in time-to-market and project development
costs for TEMs who use standards-based communications servers. The
TEMs interviewed for the survey ranked Motorola's Embedded
Communications Computing business highest for ability to deliver
fully-integrated communications servers.

o The Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA), of which
Motorola is a co-founding sponsor, was announced April 26. The CP-TA
will accelerate the development of the telecom industry's ability to
deliver interoperable communications platforms based on open industry
standards thus enabling the creation of a large mainstream market for
communications servers based on open industry standards.

o A new industry alliance, SCOPE, was recently formed to accelerate the
deployment of open carrier grade base platforms for service providers.
Its mission is to help, enable and promote the availability of open
carrier grade base platforms based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
hardware/software and Free Open Source Software (FOSS) building
blocks, and to promote interoperability to better serve service
providers and consumers.

o Motorola's Communications Server Alliance program was recently
launched and includes a new certification process and interoperability
lab to enable qualified program participants' products to be pre-
tested and validated to work with Motorola's communications servers.
