Allen-Bradley Distributed Motor Starter Requires Less Wiring and Needs No Additional Enclosure

Pre-engineered motor starter reduces installation and operating costs, increases system reliability and conserves valuable plant floor space

MILWAUKEE, July 14, 2003 - Manufacturers and system-level users who spend excessive amounts of time configuring and installing motor starters into existing applications now have a more cost-effective, time-saving solution: the new Allen-Bradley® ArmorStart(TM) distributed starter from Rockwell Automation.

ArmorStart is a pre-engineered, pre-configured combination motor starter that requires no additional enclosures and features a modular, plug-and-play design for quick and reliable installation. Since a traditional enclosure is not required, the starter can be quickly and easily mounted on the machine near the motor. The integrated, machine-mount design uses fewer cables, which simplifies wiring, minimizes panel space requirements, and allows faster and more accurate connections.

"Traditionally, engineers have built machines and control cabinets as separate units, which required massive amounts of wiring and manpower to interconnect the two," said Brian Taylor, business manager, Electronic Power Components, Rockwell Automation. "As part of Rockwell Automation's cost-saving on-machine architecture, ArmorStart is deployed directly on the machine, rather than in centralized cabinets. As a result, users have less potential for wiring problems because of shorter wiring runs and fewer connections."

Equipped with a robust IP67/NEMA Type 4 enclosure, ArmorStart provides reliable operation in environmentally demanding conditions, including wash-down environments. Additional flexibility is provided by four inputs and two outputs and an optional keypad for local start/stop control at the motor. The device can be used with motors ranging from .5 to 10 horsepower (.75 to 7.5 kW) @ 50/60 Hz for non-reversing and reversing applications with a voltage range from 200 - 460 VAC. ArmorStart can accept control voltages of 24 VDC, 120 VAC or 240 VAC.

ArmorStart's machine-mount design saves time by eliminating the need for maintenance engineers and operators to access a control panel every time they have to check a connection or make an adjustment. With its pre-tested, quick-connect wiring assembly, users can efficiently isolate problems and replace a starter or I/O locally, rather than sorting through a complex panel (which also may be a safety hazard). This speeds installation and troubleshooting, cuts engineering costs, and reduces wiring errors common in point-to-point wiring systems.

With advanced motor protection capabilities, multiple methods of motor starting and built-in DeviceNet(TM) connectivity, ArmorStart offers superior application flexibility. Moreover, the device's modular, plug-and-play design gives OEMs greater flexibility to cost-effectively disassemble and relocate equipment or make additions with relative ease.
