Motor Starter accommodates two wiring configurations.

Press Release Summary:

PSS Softstarter can be connected both inline and inside the delta configuration. When connected inside the delta, PSS can replace wye delta starters and be sized to 58% of the motor horsepower rating. Reduced rating results in smaller starter, saving space and money. Compact Line offers 3-25 A at 230-600 Vac motor softstarting and control voltages of 24-110 Vac/dc, 100-480 Vac. Flexible Line is for 18-300 A at 230 - 600 Vac operation.

Announcing Expansion of the PSS Softstarter Line

ABB is pleased to announce the expansion of the PSS Softstarter line. The PSS now covers up to 200HP when connected 'in-line' and up to 350HP when connected "inside the delta."

The PSS Softstarter is unique in its ability to be connected both in the typical "inline" configuration and "inside the delta" configuration. When connected "inside the delta," the
PSS can replace wye delta starters and be sized to 58% of the motors horsepower rating. The reduced rating is allowed due to the combination of the specially designed wye delta motor and Flexible Line PSS Softstarter. This feature can result in a softstarter that is physically two frame sizes smaller than an equivalent "in-line" softstarter, saving both space and money.

The PSS Softstarter "Compact Line" offers 3 - 25A at 230 - 600V AC motor softstarting and control voltages of 24 - 110V AC/DC; 100 - 480V AC. The "Flexible Line" is designed for 18 - 300A at 230 - 600V AC operation, and may also be wired "Inside Delta" for Star Delta starting. The "Flexible Line" is available as an open chassis or NEMA Type 1 through 4X enclosure combination, non-combination breaker, fused switch, or bypass contactor. Many other options are also available.

Primary applications for the PSS Softstarter include: elevators, pumps, blowers, centrifuges, mixers, and conveyors.

Unlike traditional wye-delta starters, the PSS Softstarter provides a nice smooth linear voltage ramp through high-speed electronic switches. The stepless voltage ramp of the PSS minimizes high starting currents and 'torque shocks' associated with across the line starters and electro-mechanical reduced voltage starters. Because the PSS performs the motor starting without any moving parts, there are no contacts to fail and replace. Contact maintenance is a constant problem with across the line and other electro-mechanical starters. The PSS includes built-in diagnostics and relays to help identify problems during start-up and run conditions. It also includes a current limit feature when a current transformer input is added.

In addition, all PSS Softstarters include a soft stop feature to bring loads, such as water in pipes and sensitive material on conveyors, to a slow halt to prevent mechanical equipment and product damage. The softstarters minimize water hammering, stress on gear boxes and drive belts when operating compressors. PSS Softstarters also help solve problems with slipping belts and stresses on bearings when starting fans.
