Komatsu GD655-3 Motor Grader Combines Power, Speed for all Grading Applications

Optimum Transmission Gives Operator Choice Of Direct Drive Or Torque Converter Modes

Rolling Meadows, IL, For CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2008- Komatsu America Corp. introduces the GD655-3 Motor Grader with unsurpassed blade geometry and suspension for uniform grading in all terrain. With an operating weight of 37,801 pounds and a blade width of 12 or 14 feet, the GD655-3 assures the operators will comfortable, confident and productive the moment they climb into the cab.

The GD655-3, with a net horsepower of 180 to 200 HP, is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 engine. The turbocharged and aftercooled high-pressure common rail fuel injection engine is EPA Tier 3 emissions certified, and remains fuel efficient without sacrificing power or productivity.

The GD655-3 is equipped with the latest Komtrax(TM) technology which sends machine operating information to a secure website utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, machine location and fuel levels are relayed to the web application for analysis. The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency.

Special features of the GD655-3 include:

o Komatsu's Exclusive Power Shift Transmission

Designed and built specifically for Komatsu Motor Graders, this feature allows the operator to select the transmission mode to match the job task; lock-up torque converter or direct drive, with the flip of a switch. The torque converter mode gives the operator excellent tractive effort, slow speed fine control while the direct drive model is ideal for high speed transport, or snow removal. The operator has the best of both worlds at their fingertips and even an inexperienced operator will see a difference in their productivity and finish grade skills. Komatsu is the only manufacturer of motor graders to provide the torque converter and direct drive feature in one machine.

o Excellent Moldboard And Blade Geometry

Komatsu's motor graders utilize an excellent moldboard geometry allowing the operator to throw the windrow product to the right side of the unit rather than into the roadway so no additional crews are needed to pick up the spill. A long wheelbase and large blade angle lets the operator achieve a greater moldboard angle, which in turn allows material to easily roll along and off the blade. The extra-long blade cylinders allow the moldboard to reach a depth of 2'8" below grade.

o Advanced Hydraulic Design

State-of-the-art hydraulics maximize speed and responsiveness in all Komatsu motor graders. A closed-center system of valves allows fluid to flow to each individual implement, making the operation of multiple controls easier than past models. Komatsu also incorporates a variable displacement pump and a load-sensing system, giving the operator the right amount of power needed for the particular situation at low or high engine rpm.

o Finger Tip, Low Effort Controls

These controls, set to an industry standard, feature short lever throws and low effort in both directions. The proper spacing of the control levers combined with the short lever throws allows the operator to use multiple controls with one hand. When the operator uses several controls at the same time, the flow is proportional to ensure several implements can operate simultaneously.

o Braking Performance

The foot controlled, maintenance-free, hydraulically operated wet type multiple-disc brakes actuate on the four rear tandem wheels, reducing the amount of operator effort The parking brake is interlocked with the transmission so when the operator puts the transmission in park the parking brake is automatically engaged. When the operator engages the transmission the parking brake is automatically released so the operator cannot drive through the brake and cause damage to the unit.

o Operator Comfort And Visibility

An ergonomically designed cab offers superior visibility to the blade, front tires, tandem tires and rear ripper from both the front and rear windshields. The front and rear glass panels are angled to prevent dust build-up. The rear window has an electric defroster and washer and wiper for optimal visibility in the harshest of weather conditions. A deluxe suspension, cloth-covered seat and backrest, with swing-up armrests and a retractable seat belt, follows the contour of the operator's body and can be easily adjusted for optimal support and comfort. The control console is adjustable backward and forward to facilitate easy entrance and exit from the cab and the steering wheel also tilts to the operator's preference.

The GD655-3 cab has a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) as well as a Falling-Object Protective Structure (FOPS). The access steps on either side of the machine are constructed with a belted-type material to minimize the chance of injury when the operator enters and exits.
