Motor Driver IC comes in thermally enhanced package.

Press Release Summary:

Series A3949SLP and A3949SLB DMOS full-bridge motor driver IC suits DC motor applications. Unit operates with single supply and with output rating of 36 V at 2.8 A. Driver is offered in small outline, 16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package measuring 5.0 x 4.4 mm. PHASE and ENABLE input terminals control speed and direction. Low rDS(On) DMOS outputs are combined with internal synchronous rectification control circuitry to reduce power dissipation.

Allegro Microsystems, Inc. Announces a Low-Cost 2.8 A DMOS Motor Driver in Small Footprint Package

A3949SLP, A3949SLB designed as most cost-effective, high-current motor driver

Worcester, MA - January 20, 2004 - Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. announces the release of a new DMOS full-bridge motor driver IC for dc motor applications. Designed to operate with a single supply, and with an output rating of 36 V at 2.8 A, the A3949
is intended to be the smallest, most cost-effective high-current DMOS motor driver available on the market today.

To further complement this motor driver's high performance, the A3949 is offered in a very small outline, 16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package (5.0 mm x 4.4 mm). This package has an exposed thermal pad, which allows for excellent thermal performance at less then 35% the area of a comparable SOIC package.

PHASE and ENABLE input terminals are provided for use in controlling the speed and direction of a dc motor with externally applied PWM control signals. Low rDS(On) DMOS outputs are combined with internal synchronous rectification control circuitry to further reduce power dissipation. With a sleep mode providing currents of less than 10 µA, the A3949 is ideally suited for office equipment, medical and portable applications.

"This solution provides the users with low-cost, high-current capability, all in an extremely small and thermally efficient package," said Tom Rowan, Allegro's Motor Control Strategic Marketing Manager.

This A3949 is manufactured using Allegro's ABCD3 (Allegro Bipolar CMOS DMOS 3rd generation) process, and is supplied in either a 16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package or a 16-lead SOIC package with copper batwing tab (suffix "LB"). The A3949 is
priced at $1.40 for quantities of 10,000.
