Motor Drive ICs cool fan motors.

Press Release Summary:

FAN8404D and FAN8408D are 2-phase, half wave motor drive ICs capable of sinking 1.2 A motor load current, while requiring 2.2 mA supply current in stand-by. FAN8408D features Hall output (HO) for motor speed detection and FAN8404D offers alarm output to signal fan lockup. Operating voltages range from 4 to 15 V. Units include built-in thermal shutdown (TSD) circuits, reverse-current protection diode, motor lock detection, and auto restart.

Original Press Release:

NEW DC COOLING FAN MOTOR DRIVE ICs IMPROVE SYSTEM RELIABILITY WHILE MINIMIZING SUPPLY CURRENT

San Jose, Calif.-March 22, 2002-Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE:FCS) adds two new DC cooling fan motor drive ICs to its growing product portfolio of motor ICs. The FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are 2-phase, half wave motor drive ICs that provide an optimum high-efficiency solution for cooling fan motors found in PC, game console and test equipment applications. The FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are capable of sinking 1.2A motor load current, while requiring just 2.2mA typical supply current in stand-by --over 50% lower than competitive limits. These motor drive ICs offer a low-cost alternative to similar products and enhance system reliability through a variety of features, such as thermal shutdown, lock detection and auto-restart, while reducing system power consumption. The two ICs present a choice of motor lock detection options, with the FAN8408D featuring Hall output (HO) for motor speed detection and the FAN8404D offering an alarm output to signal fan lockup.

The FAN8404D and the FAN8408D provide a wide range of operating voltages (from 4V to 15V). Motor lock detection and auto restart functions are integrated on the devices. The timing of lock detection and auto restart is controlled by an external capacitor connected to the lock detection (LD) pin. Built-in thermal shutdown (TSD) circuits and a reverse-current protection diode are also featured. Both the FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are offered in an 8-SOP package. Upon special request, an 8-MSOP package is also available.
