Original Press Release:

Square D Brand Model 6 Motor Control Center with PowerPact 800A to 2,500A Main Circuit Breakers Helps Maintain Process Uptime

Palatine, Ill. (USA), September 8, 2008 - The Square D® brand Model 6 Low Voltage Motor Control Center from Schneider Electric now offers increased protection of circuits that power critical processes with the integration of Square D PowerPact® M-, P- and R-frame 800A to 2,500A main circuit breakers. The PowerPact breakers' space-saving design reduces the equipment space requirement and allows for more effective electrical distribution system coordination, along with an additional layer of process and equipment protection.

"In an electrical distribution system coordination effort, a motor control center may have more than one source of energy, necessitating more than one main circuit breaker, which is the ideal scenario for Square D PowerPact M-, P- and R-frame breakers within the Model 6 Motor Control Center," said Terry Schiazza, Business Development Manager, Motor Control Centers. "For example, the traditional means of switching to generator power if grid power goes down is to manually open the main breaker for the utility feed and close the main breaker for the generator. But thanks to CPU-based Square D Micrologic® electronic trip units built into the PowerPact breakers, this task is completed automatically in a main-tie-main configuration, with little or no power interruption, and then back again when grid power is restored."

Square D PowerPact breaker frame ranges are broken into industry-standard sizes. The M-frame circuit breaker has maximum amperage of 800A, while the P- and R-frame breakers top out at 1,200A and 2,500A, respectively. In addition to acting as the main breaker for the Model 6, they are used in subfeed scenarios that power processes emanating from the motor control center. Plus, Square D Micrologic electronic trip units offer a wide range of functionality, such as multiple protective adjustments, power metering/monitoring and power quality measurement. Square D PowerPact H-frame (150A) and J-frame (250A) breakers continue to be used as the circuit protection means for motor starters contained within Model 6 Motor Control Centers.

"Many facilities, such as water/wastewater treatment plants, have multiple sources of power, because they are functional at all times; a process stoppage is simply not an option," Schiazza said. "That's why it's so important to have robust main circuit breakers in a motor control center. With multiple power redundancies, the only effective way to coordinate circuit protection to ensure the power stays on and processes keep going is technology like Square D Micrologic electronic trip units within Square D PowerPact M-, P- and R-frame breakers."
