Motoman Offers Robotic Bottle Handling Solutions for all Sizes, Shapes and Packing Patterns

Dayton, Ohio - Motoman Inc. provides highly flexible custom robotic automation solutions to the plastics industry for handling virtually any size or shape bottles and pack patterns. Solutions encompass packing bottle blanks and decorated bottles into trays, service cases, reshipper cases, gondolas, as well as bulk packing - including the ability to fill out case headers with rows of lay down bottles. Robotic handling provides labor savings and improves quality by reducing bottle marring/denting. It also reduces product costs and increases throughput and flexibility.

In Motoman's booth at NPE, a high-speed, high-performance six-axis HP50 robot equipped with a multifunction end-of-arm tool demonstrates the ability to pack blow-molded bottles into two different tray configurations using a 6 x 11 bottle matrix. The robot's end-of-arm tool consists of a rail-type gripper for engaging the neck finish of bottles and a vacuum gripper for handling corrugate trays. This multi-function gripper does not need to be adjusted between bottle types. The cell includes a horizontal storage magazine for accumulation of empty corrugate trays prior to robotic tray packing. Packing stations include two tray tilt mechanisms, and packed trays are shown in a palletized configuration.

Also in the same cell, a revolutionary new dual-arm Motoman DA20 robot with a 20 kg payload per arm and 13 axes of motion demonstrates its human-like flexibility of movement by performing bottle decasing, leak testing, labeling, vision inspection and repacking operations.

The DA20 and HP50 robots are controlled by the Motoman NX100 robot controller that features a robust PC architecture, Windows® CE programming pendant, and easy-to-use INFORM III programming language. The NX100 offers unmatched multiple axes control capability to maximize flexibility while minimizing cost of integration and eliminating risk of robot collisions. Dual-channel safety features include enhanced E-stop functionality, integrated speed monitoring, manual brake release switches, and compliance with both ANSI/RIA R1506-1999 and Canadian safety standards.
