Motion Controller features 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interface.

Press Release Summary:

Model XPS is suited for multi-axis motion applications that require 10 kHz servo and data acquisition rates, multiple I/O functionality with less than 50 ns latency, and real-time multitasking capabilities. Integrated controller/driver provides connection for up to 8 axes of stepper or dc servo motor stages. Position commands and motion-grouping functionality can be executed through C++, VisualBasic, or LabView or through embedded TCL programming language.

Original Press Release:

New High Performance, Ethernet-based Motion Controller for Precision Applications

Irvine, California - June 22, 2004 - Newport Corporation has announced the introduction of its newest high-performance universal motion controller, the XPS. The XPS combines simplicity of operation with advanced features previously found on only the highest-end industrial motion controllers. Advanced trajectory, data acquisition, error compensation and powerful embedded programming capabilities are easily implemented through the XPS' high speed 10/100 Base-T Ethernet communication interface.

The XPS is ideal for demanding multi-axis motion applications that require 10 kHz servo and data acquisition rates, multiple I/O functionality with less than 50 ns latency, and true real-time multitasking capabilities. These include demanding aerospace applications such as target tracking and simulation, industrial machine vision and automation applications, high-resolution research applications like optical coherence tomography or X-Ray diffraction, as well as OEM applications such as semiconductor wafer inspection and handling. These advanced features are easily accessed through the web-based utilities and because the XPS operated in native units, such as mm, degrees, microns, etc, motion commands do not require conversion to encoder counts or steps which further simplifies complex applications.

Advanced trajectory modes include multi-axis PVT and spline, analog tracking as well as traditional jogging, point-to-point and line-arc motions. While the integrated controller/driver provides easy connection for up to 8 axes of stepper or DC servo motor stages the XPS also has the ability to control other motion products by using standard pass-through cards. The advanced servo loops and control algorithms allow users to send commands to piezo, brushless DC, voice coils and other similar device drivers. A robust set of position commands and motion-grouping functionality can be executed through standard programming interfaces such as C++, VisualBasic or LabView or through the embedded TCL programming language of the XPS. This is extremely powerful for applications where common routines can be programmed in TCL and executed autonomously within the XPS while other motions are directed by other external user programs. TCL programs can include XPS API commands or external device commands sent using TCP/IP protocols. Advanced I/O and event triggers permit the gathering and triggering of both internal and external events including motion initialization, TCL program execution, high speed data acquisition at 10 kHz and analog tracking.
