Motion Control Board Smooths Out Jitter
The new HPWM 02U motion-control board from CyberResearch, Inc. uses PWM (pulse-width-modulated) signals to smooth out jitter in electrically noisy environments. The board provides two isolated PWM output channels with 16 bits of resolution, so pulse widths can range from 100 us to 655.35 s.
If you have ever listened to AM (amplitude modulated) and FM (frequency modulated) radio stations during a thunderstorm, you know that FM stations provide clearer signals. That's because electrical noise affects amplitude more directly than frequency. Your ear interprets the noise as "static." Your stepper motor interprets noise as random steps, or "jitter" in the output position. PWM is a sophisticated form of FM, so its noise suppression makes it ideal for motion control, broadcasting, and communications.
Each of the two output channels on the CyberResearch® HPWM 02U analog output board is isolated to 2,500Vdc. So are all 8 digital input lines, which can also be used as 16-bit 500-Hz UP counters. The 8 SPDT output relays have dielectric strengths of 1500 Vrms coil-to-contact and 1000 Vrms contact-to-contact.
