Henkel Expands Line of Molding Compounds for Hearing Aid Fabrication

Rocky Hill, Conn. - August 24, 2004.... Henkel Corporation has expanded its line of Loctite® ResinAid molding compounds, adhesives, and equipment for hearing aid shell fabrication, assembly, and repair. The expanded product line includes UV/visible light curable molding compounds, light cure equipment, and instant adhesives, UV silicones, light cure acrylics, and light cure cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Fourteen (14) low viscosity and eight (8) high viscosity molding compounds are available in a range of colors for shell fabrication. With four variations of pink, ten variations of brown, two reds, two blues, and four clear formulations, hearing aid manufacturers can be sure of closely matching natural skin tones. Loctite® ResinAid molding compounds comply with ISO-10993 standards for skin surface medical devices. The line also features nine adhesive formulations used for bonding shell components.

In addition, Henkel offers a complete line of application and curing equipment, including the newest offering, the Loctite® ResinAid Shell Curing System, a batch curing chamber designed to light cure multiple assemblies while blanketing the parts with inert gas to ensure excellent surface gloss. The equipment line also includes simple pressure-time dispense systems and molding compound retrieval applicators that ensure repeatable, consistent hearing aid manufacturing.

The Process

The ResinAid process is simple and fast. Once a solid mold of the patient's ear is received and the shell investment has been made, the shell molding process begins. The investment is filled with the one-part ResinAid low-viscosity molding compound, covered, and placed into the ResinAid light cure system for initial cure. Upon exposure to light for just 5 to 20 seconds, the outer portion of the shell cures to a uniform wall thickness of 0.030" throughout. The remaining molding compound is then poured out of the investment; the shell is filled with a water/glycerin solution, and returned to the cure chamber for full and final cure.

Once cure is complete, a high-viscosity molding compound is used to form a vent channel and is cured using a spot light cure system. The receiver is assembled and positioned in the shell where it is tacked in place with a light cure silicone adhesive. Once the electronics are inserted into the shell, the faceplate is bonded to the open end of the shell using instant or light cure adhesives. Finally, the faceplate is trimmed to the contours of the shell, and the hearing aid production process is complete.
