Aonix® Announces Upcoming Safety-Compliant Kernel at ESC, Boston

SmartKernel(TM) module provides mission-critical memory and time partitioning

SAN DIEGO, CA, PARIS, FRANCE, September 15, 2003-Aonix®, an independent global company delivering complete solutions for safety- and mission-critical applications, is pleased to announce the upcoming release of its SmartKernel(TM) technology. SmartKernel will provide safety and security protection through a memory and time-partitioned kernel. Language-specific configurations of SmartKernel will be released, enabling developers to create systems where multiple applications in multiple languages can safely run on a single board.

By implementing SmartKernel, developers gain a certifiable time- and memory-partitioned core that supports higher-level operating systems. For the first time, developers can economically integrate and maintain independently developed and certified safety-critical components as well as support components targeting different levels in the certification hierarchy all operating on the same platform. No longer will developers be required to recertify the entire system each time a component changes, nor will they need to certify all components to Level-A certification because components coexist.

"The SmartKernel technology is yet another example of Aonix innovation in the safety and mission-critical arena," noted Greg Gicca, Director of Product Marketing, Ada Products, Aonix. "The certification process requires a significant investment both in time and money. By providing a core technology that is safety and security certifiable and that supports language-specific, higher-level operating systems, Aonix has broken through the certification barrier, enabling developers to isolate the components that need recertification from the entire system and to tailor certification levels as appropriate for system design."

The SmartKernel core contains the Enabler, an extremely small and fast operating-system enabling layer that provides only the primitive features necessary to implement a language-specific operating system or full general-purpose OS. Because of its small size, the SmartKernel core is easily certified to both safety and security standards. With lower layer support for higher-level operating systems, all operating systems and applications functioning with the SmartKernel easily port to new boards and architectures.

With the evolution of SmartKernel technology, Aonix will release additional language-specific modules for Ada95, embedded Java, C/C++, Ada83 and an ARINC-653 OS interface. With the SmartKernel time and memory partitioning, developers will be able to certify language-specific applications at various certification levels all operating within the same system with much less time and for much less cost.
